Recovery Going Well

Andy was discharged at 7 pm yesterday following his RALP. He is doing amazingly well! He tells me that he's only taking paracetamol and ibuprofen because the consultant has told him to take them  regularly for five days. He slept really well last night and is his normal self this morning. We saw the consultant before he was discharged and he confirmed that he'd been able to preserve nerves on both sides. I've now just got to stop him from doing too much for the next few weeks!

That is good news. You are right, you do need to stop him overdoing it, if things go wrong now it will be quite a set back. Keep us updated.

Zoogirl, great news, the next major milestone is passing that first motion, remind him not to force it. The bowel, bladder and new joint are all close to each other. Keep the water intake up especially if the warm weather continues.

Thanks Chris

He's definitely drinking plenty Chris - his catheter bag is filling at an alarming rate! 😂

That's great news - Movicol is recommended as a stool softener, I've got about 3 boxes overbought in a cupboard! By the way, I got a lot of irritation from the catheter bag strap so quickly realised I should change leg between day and night time.

Good luck

Zoogirl, adthedad , is quite right that the leg bag can cause irritation, especially in the warmer weather and changing legs each day is a good idea.

Another option is as follows. I had a shower every day and you Will need an extra thigh strap. I assume you have been told that you only disconnect the leg bag from the catheter after 5-7 days, this is inline with infection control.

If showering in the morning, disconnect the night bag from the leg bag and depending on what you have been given drain it and thow the night bag away. I was given two leg bags and 14 night bags. Make sure the leg bag is empty and securly attached to the catheter. Make sure the catheter is secured to the thigh strap. Remove the bag straps let it hang down and shower, dry off and put the spare thigh strap on the other leg, transfer the catheter and bag to the dry strap and refit the leg bag straps. Remove the wet strap and dry for the next day. If the leg bag has a fabric backing just pat it to soak up any moisture.

I have also used a soft dry wipe under the part of the strap that is causing the leg to get sore.

I use the adhesive catheter fixation device and a leg sleeve, with a short tube leg bag. Unfortunately you get what the hospital has, not necessarily what is best.

Thanks Chris
