Hi everyone, I have just got in contact with my dad, he is 79. So he has just been diagnosed with prostate cancer and now a week or so later (bit of blur) he has had a bone scan and he also has bone cancer. He tells me its not life threatening, that the injection he has every 3 months is doing the job ??? I feel I dont know him well and I need to be there for him so dont want to question him too much. Can anyone help me? He is in hospital at the moment to drain his kidney. Im just so confused and worried.

I would be so grateful if anyone can give me a bit more info on how things are.

Kind regards

Well for general advice follow this link

It's difficult to get into the specifics for your father, but generally prostate cancer is very treatable. Strictly speaking he does not have bone cancer, he has prostate cancer which has spread to the bones. Three monthly hormone injections will control this for many years, between 3 and 10.

If he had not been diagnosed with cancer his life expectancy would have been to about 87. The cancer means he probably will die before he gets to 87, but it is probably only reducing his life expectancy by a couple of years. Keep posting if you have other questions.

Hi Nouranglithe.

I'm sorry to here about your dad's diagnosis.

I'm not medically trained and it's difficult to say anything constructive with so few details. Unfortunately it may be the case that your dad's prostate cancer has spread to his bones, if it has, it is deemed incurable but it is still treatable, so all is not lost.

My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer at the same age as yours. I'm ashamed to say that unlike you, I didn't make enquiries into his exact condition. He too, was put on 3 monthly injections of something but I'm not sure what. Like most dad's he was a private man and didn't like to stress out his loved ones with his health issues. All he told me was that it had spread and they couldn't deal with it surgically.

He lived for another 8 years. It was only the last few months that he struggled. About a month before he passed away his PSA was in the thousands and the cancer had spread to so many of his bones.

As I said I'm not medically qualified but it appears that the outcomes for stage 4 prostate cancer, like most of the less serious stages, can vary enormously.

The only advice I can give you is tell your dad, as often as possible, that you love him and be there for him he needs you.

Although mine was a brilliant dad, I always thought that he wasn't particularly strong mentally or physically. It is only now, after knowing what he must have gone through, that I know how wrong I was.

Good luck to you both.👍
