Mri letter

Hi

Recieved a letter on nhs app , your mri scan has showed some areas that require further investigation via a biopsy,  we will arrange an appointment at the Latp clinic to further discuss and if consented perform biopsy. This has now been booked in for 3 weeks time but we don't know anymore about the mri findings , is this normal or should we have the findings .

Thank you

Hi, they didn't tell me anything much about my MRI scan, other than I needed a biopsy.

When I went in for the biopsy the consultant told me about the MRI as part of getting my consent. I'm glad I didn't know the score before hand as I'd have probably worried more as it was higher than I had anticipated.

The biopsy was trans rectal which I found to be a painless if a bit undignified process.

The result came back no sign of cancer so everything was fine. I hope that's the result you get, even when it looks bleak there is always the possibility that it's just something suspicious and nothing to do with cancer.

Good luck and keep us informed  xx

Hi again.

I always asked for copies of scan and biopsy results. I also asked for copies of any consultation summaries. I did so, because it's so easy to get confused or misunderstand what you've been told.

I'd have thought that they would have given you a pi-rads score and a radiological cancer staging, but neither are essential.

The fact that suspicious areas have been seen and need further investigation is common. It might be that these areas are non cancerous they could be due to inflammation from other prostate conditions or benign lesions. The biopsy will give a much clearer picture of your husband's exact condition.

Good luck with the biopsy.👍

That's fairly normal.

If you want you can ask for the MRI report, that will include details of size and position of unusual areas of the prostate and what probability on a scale of 1 to 5 that it is clinically significant cancer.

It can be interesting if you are into technical details, or quite boring if you're not.

You seeing the report won't change the diagnosis so I guess they don't send it automatically to save paper. If the biopsy does reveal cancer, the MRI report may affect your treatment choice. I would hope at that point anything significant from the biopsy and the MRI would be explained to you.

Between the MRI and the biopsy they'll be almost certain one way or another if it is cancer and /or if it's localised in the prostate. If it is (as was mine) I didn't have a bone scan, but I don't know if this is NHS-wide advice or specific to each hospital trust. Unfortunately everyone goes through the cycle of waiting for appointments, getting results and then moving on to the next step and the process heaps worry onto of worry. I'd built up so much worry that when I got my diagnosis of T2b G3+4 I was relieved! There's no alternative but just to go through the process and try to keep calm.
