Weight training after RALP

Hi there,

I am currently 5 weeks post surgery and I’m desperate to start weight training again.

Does anyone have any advice for how to start off slowly, what to avoid etc.

Yours gratefully

Nick

The advice I was given was lay off weights for several months. It’s major surgery and takes time to heal. In the support group I attend a significant proportion of the guys had suffered hernias from trying to do much and lift too much too early. I started back at the gym some 5 months post op and was still feeling twinges in the stomach area after 18 months when lifting weights. Take it easy is the best advice and be patient. Starting too early can set you back and cause more issues later. Good luck with the recovery.

Don't do it! Take your time and listen to your surgeon.

Hi Nick

Yes take it easy, I was very active before the op and now 6 months down the following a couple of blips I’m only now getting back to some HIIT and light running without any discomfort. Just go with how your body feels and be careful.

Good luck with your recovery

I took advice from my surgeon as when to start back. I was surprised how soon he advised. It was about 5 weeks after surgery I went to the gym, but pre op I had been weight training 2/3 times per week.

When I did go back I reduced the weights by 1/2. Just took my time to build back up. I also avoided abdominal exercise for a while.

Thanks all. Jim, I had similar advice from my surgeon (4-6 weeks) but also some warnings from others about the risk of hernias etc, which makes this difficult to navigate. I have spoken to my PT and we are going to start with some light weights that don’t engage the core and see how it goes. If anything hurts them I’ll stop it.
