So hubby had has RARP surgery yesterday. He's home and doing ok. His catheter is leaking slightly. The hospital didn't seem overly concerned but I was just wondering if this is common and whether it will stop soon?

Also, he has reacted to the dressings and the skin is very inflammed..almost burnt. Any suggestions of what will help please! Thanks

Willow, a bit of leakage past the penis when passing a motion is frequently reported. Alot of leakage past the end of the penis can be a sign of the catheter not draining properly. Look out for kinks in the pipes or having the bag to high. Drink extra water in the hot weather. If the catheter stops draining get in touch with your hospital again.

Thanks Chris

Hi Willow,

Yes, I had a regular small leak for the 24 days my catheter was in. I found it was best managed by my own sensations. If it feels like it's pulling or uncomfortable then generally there was a leak. If I got into a position where it felt okay then the leak went away. Give him time and he will master it. I hope he doesn't have to have one for too long. Do make sure he is drinking as there is a strong temptation to not drink so much.

I assume you mean urine leaking down the outside of the tube and out the tip of the penis rather than a leak in the plastic pipework outside his body.

I had a catheter for a few weeks. I didn't have RARP so not directly comparable to your husband. At one time I had a tap at the end of the catheter rather than a bag. The reason for this system is irrelevant here, but what is relevant is that when the tap was closed after a little while I would get leaking out the tip of the penis. when using a bag I never had leaking.

If your husband's leaking is just a small amount, then it is not an issue. If more is coming out his penis than going into the bag, it implies the tube is blocked and it needs further investigation.
