Penile Atrophy

I am diagnosed with contained PC and Gleeson 3+4z. I am 79 and  my urologist (private) leant towards surveillance, when I pushed him for an opinion. After seeing Oncologist (private) who said that eventually it will spread and as I am fit and active I decided for HT and RT

i have the usual hot sweats and am taking Sage tablets which seem to help with the severity ( just had 2nd and last  slow release H injection and starting RT in 2 weeks. Also loss of libido. I also gave noticed a slight shrinkage of my penis and upon investigation found out that penile atrophy can occur. I contacted my GP and saw and discussed the issue with a NHS urology nurse and am going to try a penile pump with a follow up appt to discuss this or future penile injections if things don’t improve.
My point is should my Oncologist or someone have mentioned this condition as if left untreated and not exercising the penile muscle it could be irreversible

I would be interested in other views and experiences

Hi John. The short answer is the oncologist just assumed that at an ancient!! 79 year old only used your penis for peeing. When I asked my young nurse to add a PSA test to my bloods she said, just a few questions too answer. No.1 Have you ejaculated in the last 48 hours. She asked this with a smile and a giggle on here face as I believe she assumed this question did not apply to me as a 75 year old!. The other one was riding a bike also with a smile. Yes I said it's parked outside..Incidently age is why your urologist suggested surveillance.

Ageism is alive and well in our good old NHS...

it was a private consultant as I read it?

I’ve found with my Dad and uncle  less ageism rather than what treatment will be more positive than detrimental - my 86 year old uncle has not found ageism. My Dad, was given all options for his bladder cancer, we felt the middle ground was best for him and his circumstances rather than more aggressive path.

I appreciate this can vary from area to area and maybe even doctor to doctor.

Hi John

As you will read in other posts they say " Welcome to the Club that nobody wants to Join ! "

Just to comment  that I shared a similar Gleeson Score to your own and in 2023 I was offered a HIFU procedure at UCLH and from which I have fully recovered.  And am now cancer free.

I have some additional observations in reply to your post and if you are able to direct message me I`d be very pleased

to hear from you.

Especially if you are the John Breckman I believe you to be !!
