How long usually between MRI scan and biopsy.

I had a MRI scan on the 10th of August this year and got a phone call 5 days latter saying I needed a biopsy  but I haven't heard a thing since. This morning my scan results turned up in the NHS showing a likert 5 and T3aN0. Spent a bit of time trying to find out what these terms mean which I know . I am concerned that I haven't been given a appointment for a biopsy yet. Should I chase this up or is this usual ?

Two or three weeks is about normal. You should chase this up, because it is now getting a bit too long. Falling through the cracks in the NHS bureaucracy is a common problem, you really have to manage your own care nowadays.

My timeline was MRI results on 19th May (PIRADS 5 - T3a). Biopsy done 5th June. Would have expected your NHS urology department would give you some further information. Worth giving them a call. Good luck, and sorry you’ve had to join this club.

Hi Mike,

I'm sorry that you've had to join the club, but welcome to the forum.

As you are now probably aware your MRI scan indicates that there is a very high chance of you having prostate cancer and that it may have breached the prostate capsule. Having said that, we've had similar MRI reports, where the lesion(s) have been benign.

Only a biopsy can tell if you have got cancer and how aggressive it's likely to be. So like  others have suggested I'd chase up it up.

What's your PSA, mate?

In my case it was 9 days from MRI Result to Biopsy.

Mine was one calendar month from MRI to a guided transperineal biopsy (ie biopsy through external skin, not through the rectum).

I put a copy of the radiologist's report through several AI engines - each explained it all in layman's terms and for me a really helpful step in understanding the medical lingo. It's a lot to take in and the initial consultations can be a blur.
