Waiting for open

Hi I’m waiting for a prostatectomy

my cancer is Gleason 8 and 10.2 psa

I’ve waited a month with no confirm date but obviously worried about my cancer spreading

Hi Stushy

I'm sorry that you've had to join the club, but welcome to the forum.

I see you were diagnosed 3 years ago. What was your PSA, Gleason score and cancer staging then? Presumably you've been on active surveillance? What is your cancer staging now?

By 'waiting for open', do you mean that you're scheduled for an open surgery prostatectomy? I had a similar diagnosis to yours. I had robotic surgery, I ended up waiting for 5 months for my op. During that time there wasn't any disease progression.

To put your mind at rest, you could always give them a call to chase them up.

Best of luck, mate. 👍

Hi Adrian

when first diagnosed my Gleason was 5 and psa 4.6

So was on active surveillance until recently

I ring every week for updates on my op and on the cancellation list

speaking to the nurses they always say the same thing ie you are in a queue behind a lot of other patients and ops are performed on when first decided on having the procedure and not medical priority which is all very stressful

Your journey seems similar to mine, mate. Gleason 6 (3+3) to start with and in 2 years ended up Gleason 9 (4+5)

I fully understand the anxiety of waiting for the op with a high Gleason score. Is yours still prostate confined?

Yes in the main

some concerns over nearby lymph nodes which the consultant will remove when operating

it’s the uncertainty of waiting and making the cancer worse by spreading which is keeping me awake at night

if I knew that waiting for the operation won’t make it worse then I would be a little more relaxed but no one can guarantee this
