Post Brachytherapy LDR op

I hope this helps. I'm a week after LDR Brachytherapy surgery and thought I should share in case anyone is heading on the same route. (Feel free to ask qustions if it will help)  I'm now the proud owner of 83 radioactive seeds.

On the day, checked in early with only a small glass of water that morning. Staff were great, had a good chat with the anesthetist and the surgeon dropped by. Two hours of general anesthetic and home early evening with a catheter. Told to down 2 litres of water a day and take Tamulosin once a day. Soreness in the expected place but about the same as the biopsy.

The next day, removing the catheter was enough to make me wince but over quickly. The hospital phoned to make sure I wasn't in urine retention. Have been passing urine many times a day and so far haven't been out for more than an hour or so.  Sometimes urgent, flow a little bit less than usual but I'm only one week into this.

Apart from the urinary changes, I've been really washed out energy-wise. Hopefully this will improve soon. CT scan booked for 4 weeks after the op.

Good luck everyone.

Thanks Adrian,

I was lucky, I had options and Brachy seemed the best fit for me.

Best of luck.

Yeah, congratulations Ford, all sounds par for the course. If your experience is anything like mine, the tiredness I'm afraid will linger for a while as will the urinary symptoms but both will eventually improve. I became a regular napper in the 6 months post brachy (secretly quite enjoyed the naps but didn't tell the wife that!) and after probably 6-9 months my urinary function was completely normal again.

Good luck!

Hi Ford

I'm 9 months post procedure, I'm still taking tamoulsion for the pee and I still have some urgency with my bowels, but other than that going pretty good.

The very best of luck to you.

Hi Ford,

Welcome to the Brachy club sounds like you had a similar procedure to me with no complications long may it last.

Hi Ford.

A very helpful post, mate. There aren't many on here that have gone down the brachytherapy route, so your input is particularly valuable, especially to those considering this option.

Cheers.👍

Post Brachytherapy LDR op - an update.

Today is two months after my Brachy procedure. A few notes on how recovery is going - feel free to ask questions if you are thinking of this route.

On the plus side; my 83 seeds have reached their half life and are hopefully seeing off plenty of cancer cells. PSA test booked for first week in December, phone call with the Dr a week later.  My fatigue in the afternoons is starting to fade. I'm only up once a night to urinate.

On the down side; drinking between 1.5 and 2 litres of water a day is a real struggle - the frequency and urgency of urination is a very limiting factor in day to day life. Don't go out much and have had to decline a few invitations in the last couple of weeks.  There was an episode about 3 weeks ago when I suffered a nasty attack of piles - painful and bloody. They settled down after about a week with application of cream and some careful re-insertion.   Still no return to running yet - I was on 3 times a week - but hopefully soon.  My impatience is growing.

Overall: I find life limited and a big change from 2 months ago - not a great feeling.  I have to keep reminding myself this process is dealing with my cancer and the 'one and done' brachy procedure was a good move comparatively given my circumstances.

I'll post another up date after the PSA test. If you are thinking of the Brachytherapy route don't let my impatience put you off. We all react differently to the procedure physically and psychologically.

Good luck to one and all.
