Lower back pain 4 weeks after robotic radical prostatectomy

My 72 year old husband had prostate cancer gleason score 3+4. He had a robotic radical prostatectomy 4 weeks ago. He had bad back pain while he had the catheter in. The catheter was removed a week and a half ago. He has recently started experiencing lower back pain which sometimes radiates down his front legs. Luckily it’s not constant. 2 days ago,  apart from having it in the morning, the rest of the day went quite well. The following day it was a different story and he had to lie down to get the pressure off. Yesterday he was able to manage it by lying down with knees raised. Pain killers do help.  Has anyone else had this?

It’s probably a good idea to check for a UTI, in case antibiotics are required.

Cxty, definitely needs checking out, could be an infection.

Thanks Chris

Hi

Did he have any lymph nodes removed? Sometimes fluid can build up after removal causing lymphocele putting pressure on nerves.

Apparently no lymph nodes were removed.

Hi Cxty,

I had lower back pain which radiated into my right hip and upper right leg. My op was in June 2024 and in late 2024 they checked me out for a possible tumour in my hip. Nothing was found and I had a couple of meetings with a Physio who was convinced it was a muscle problem caused during the operation. I was given some exercises to do and after a few days of doing those exercises there was a pop and the pain has improved ever since.

During this summer, I started bowling with a local group. The first few weeks I could only last about 8 ends before my back became too painful and I had to stop. By the end of the summer I was lasting 12 to 14 ends. I am now starting a course that runs for 12 weeks which is 45 minutes of nutritional advice and 45 minutes of exercise. The hope is that at the end my back will be stronger and I can continue to do the exercises at home. The course is free and is jointly paid for by the NHS and my local council. I stumbled across it while searching the internet for help.

My advice is talk to your GP and once a UTI is ruled out then ask to see a physio.

Thank you. Today he has been doing ok. For the first time in a week, he hasn’t retired to bed early to get some respite. The pain today has been manageable so here’s hoping he starts improving. Would it be too soon to see a physio? He’s only 4 weeks in from surgery.
