3 years post surgery.

Good morning all.

I have just received my 3rd year   p s a results of <0.1 which is of course excellent news, especially with the histology showing EPE & positive margins.                          The letter I received from the hospital nursing staff confirming my PSA results also said, as it is now 3 years of undetectable PSA results we can now refer you back to your GP for your future care. This will be shared care but all future communication will be through your G P.
What I would like to ask you knowledgeable people is if you would think that is normal procedure or just my hospital (mid Yorkshire nhs) that uses this procedure.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

All the best to you all.  Jeff.

Thanks Adrian.

I have seen that you are off the beer for a while, when’s your next pint planned for ?

I will have a drink for both of us & hope your 3 year test is still undetectable on your next test, I know you are a week or two behind me with similar histology I think / positive margins. I have read previously that positive margins aren’t a great indicator of having a recurrence it’s more about where they are & the actual positive margin border.

I myself have always had my psa tests done at my GP surgery & access the results through systemline but the hospital always do the follow ups firstly through a telephone appointment & then recently they just write & let me know when to retest normally 6 months. Now the letter this time said to wait for my GP to contact me & let me know my next test period, I like you will stick to 6 monthly tests if my GP agrees.

Anyway thanks for the good wishes & all the best to yourself & everyone else on this great site.

Jeff.

And congratulations on your psa result Niko.

It’s always a nervous time waiting for the results but that is what we have to deal with.

Your surgeon will probably go to 3 monthly tests for the first 12 months then may go to 6 monthly.

Let us know what he says, have you had your post surgery histology yet mate ?

Adrian.

Congratulations on your support of the other person & & also my good wishes to them & hope that their next blood test Is improved, I had a friend who also had a poor blood test & fluid retention in his legs & was advised to stay off the booze of which he improved significantly after a period of months without beer.

Sorry I thought you also had positive margins but it was the EPE i had got mixed up, so your next PSA test will be just before xmas, hopefully another undetectable result for you & a double reason to have a celebration 🍻

All the best everyone.

Hi, Jeff.

A great result, mate. Long may they continue.πŸ‘

It seems that the frequency of PSA tests after RARP seem to vary between different hospitals/Trusts.

At mine, they had me on 3 monthly PSA checks for the first two years, then every 6 months. I'm due my first 6 month check in a couple of weeks.

Right from the outset, I've been managing my own tests, which are done at my GP's. I have far less travelling and get the results much quicker than at hospital. I usually get my results with in 24 hours through Systmonline.

I intend to continue 6 month testing for two years, then if all is well, move to annual checks.

I'll have a soft drink, I'm off the booze at present, to celebrate your good health.

Congrats mate on another good result after 3 years πŸ‘πŸ»

I just had my first one a few days ago that was the same, I had it done at the doctors then sent the results to my surgeon and have a consultation with him tomorrow but to be honest after that I will just use the doctors and as long as the results are the same 🀞 will just leave it at that , I did pay though for private surgery so am not in the NHS system now anyway

Thanks mate and yes I had those quite soon after surgery, it was all contained and all clear margins with nearly full nerve sparing , he did it with neurosafe and had to take slightly more on one side than the other but am happy with recovery so far πŸ‘

I'm on the wagon until at least mid December. I'm supporting someone who had a poor liver blood test result and was advised to lay off the booze. Their next test is a couple of weeks before Xmas. Let's hope they show some improvement. I don't fancy being dry over the festive season.😱

As you said, Jeff, our PCa history is similar.  You're just 10 weeks in advance of me. We're both the same age, both had similar PSA levels, both opted for RARP,  and were both found to have a T3a staging.

There are a couple of differences. Your Gleason was downgraded from 7 to 6, mine was upgraded from 8 to 9. You had a positive margin, mine were negative.

Our EPE, plus your positive margin, and my high Gleason, are factors that can increase the chances of BCR.

However, fingers crossed, we're both doing fine. πŸ‘

Hi Jeff,

Congrats on the latest results. I've just had mine through a year after surgery and am the same as you <0.1

The hospital down here in South Wales is still managing my future tests but they are done at my local GP with the results available within 24 hours via My Medical Record system they have here.

I'm on 6 monthly tests until 2030 then yearly after that until 2024

Dave

Hi Dave.

Congratulations on your undetectables long may they continue.

Yes your follow ups are in line with mine mate, I also have always had my psa taken at the G P practice & reviewed the results online, the hospital staff then contacted me by letter confirming the results & advising on the next psa test up to now 6 monthly,  as previously stated after 3 years they have now referred me back to my G P for all future care. I now await to hear from my G P regarding the timescale of future testing.

All the best Jeff.
