I've got it

Hi everyone,

Before I go in to details, just want to say what a huge comfort finding this forum has been since I got my diagnosis.

I'm 54 and was given my diagnosis last Tuesday 2nd December. That date will be etched on my mind forever. My PSA was 7.8 and then 9.5 on the repeat. Also there is family history with this.

My Gleeson score is 3+4 and 11 of the 15 samples they took at my biopsy were positive.

Even though I was prepared for the worse it has still knocked the stuffing out of me and the worse part was realising what my treatment options are. That was something I wasn't expecting.

After a lot of soul searching, research, thinking and talking it feels like Surgery is the best option. They also mentionedvRadiotherapy and Active Surveillence but not recommended either of those options.

Focal Therapy is not available where I am on the NHS and I'm not convinced it would be the best option, has anyone had this treatment?

It's been a very emotional week but think I'm ready just want to get this done and get on with recovery

Hi, Tim.

I'm sorry that you've had to join us, but welcome to the forum, mate.

You're a bit younger than most of us old codgers, you're bound to be upset. We've all been worried and know how you must feel.

Do you know if your cancer staging, is it contained in the prostate?

In the grand scheme of things, your diagnosis isn't too bad. Your cancer is low grade and your PSA is not drastically elevated. To be offered all treatment options is also good news.

Here's an excellent video on all treatment options and their possible side effects.

If you're looking at surgery, here's another very informative video.

Good luck, mate, and please keep us updated. 👍

Hi Tim. Welcome! I want to give you some encouragement by telling you my story so far. I'm 68 and healthy. I was a Gleason 3+4 and apparently the cancer contained in the prostate. I had the Prostatectomy in late July 2025 and am now almost leak free and regaining modest night time natural erections. I've just returned to the gym and hope to be reasonably fit in a few weeks. So I feel lucky and I hope you will be too. Age is on your side. Regards...

It's always a shock but if contained in the prostate , 3+4 is actually the lowest grade that would need treatment.

The hardest  decision now is to weigh up the options for treatment. They may have suggested the operation as it is  mostly contained but Just take your time and don't rush in but make sure  you are  fully aware  of the long and  short term side effects. specially  on erections and urinary system post operation if you go down that route.

Thank you all for the replies and the positive words. Thanks also for the video links Adrian

Yes Adrian it is contained with in the Prostate so that is a positive.

I spoke to my Specialist nurse earlier today to inform her that I have decided on Surgery. My case was discussed last week by the consultants and that was their recommendation give the number of cancerous samples.

I'm getting my head around the unrinary and erection side effects and will just have to deal with them. In the end being alive is the most important thing

Just waiting now for my first appointment with the consultant.
