Recommended treatments for enlarged prostate.

I'm 75 now, and have an enlarged prostate, something I guess most of men of my age are living with.

In November I was referred by my doctor to the urology department of my local hospital. I received a notification telling me that if I had not heard from them by 29th December 2025, I should contact them for an update.

Having done this I was advised there is a 60 week waiting list, meaning I will have to wait a further 52 weeks before I can expect any further response from them.

Because of this I'm now thinking about going private, but I'm unsure about what would be the best treatment to have. I'm aware of treatments which incorporate vapor and/or laser threatment, also the Urolift procedure which I've recently become aware of.

Can members give any recommendations please, and whether they've undergone procedures via the NHS, or have paid privately, and in doing so, give some idea of the cost incurred?

Thank you.

That's a long wait! Sometimes with an enlarged Prostate it can restrict the flow of urine and if severe, some men are offered a TURP, which is a reaming out to relieve pressure on the Urethra. Such a need should call for greater priority. You could ring maybe Spire or Nuffield to get an idea what they can offer and get a general idea of cost of various treatments. If you don't have medical insurance, private treatment can be costly.

Hi Barry, and Happy New Year!

Yes, I'm familiar with the TURP procedure. I was once a theatre nurse and worked in theatre recovery. The TURP procedure was a fairly common procedure and patients, after surgery, would arrive in recovery catheterised and attached to big bags of irrigation fluid helping to clear blood and debris from the bladder area. At the time I thought to myself I hoped it was something I would never need to have done. And now here I am!

However, it does appear there are now more "customer" friendly procedures available, particularly the Urolift procedure.

What I am going to do now is monitor things and see where I'm at in a years time, notwithstanding that things deteriorate, and I'm forced to go private.

From the searching I've done online, this could cost between £5000 and £8000. I'd prefer not to pay this, but if needs must!

Thanks for your input.
