The wait for biopsy results

User
Posted 26 Jan 2026 at 13:01

Hi, first time poster here currently going through the process of diagnosis and just wondering how you guys coped with the wait for biopsy results, I came out of the hospital with a positive attitude ( even though the biopsy was something I never want again, I had 24 samples taken and was uncomfortable throughout the whole procedure) but as time has passed 7 days now, a sense of dread has set in that I can’t seem to shake, it’s worse at night and sleeping has turned into somewhat of a challenge, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

Belgium, thanks for passing on your PSA level and pi-rads score. Obviously you're  aware that your PSA is elevated, and your MRI suggests a very high likelihood of clinically significant PCa. Having said that, these are only indicators we've had lads with high PSA and pi-rads 5  who've needed no treatment. Their PSA was higher due to non-cancerous prostatitis which caused inflammation of the prostate.

It's only your biopsy that can definitely tell if you've got any cancerous cells and if so how aggressive they are likely to be. Keep us updated, mate.

I think I received my test results 3weeks after the biopsy. To be fair, I was not as clued up as I was now, my PSA was 21, had no symptoms apart from the constant waking up to pee. I felt because I had no symptoms, even if the results turned out to be positive, the key was to have treatment options available to me with curative intent. I know it is easy said than done, live your life, enjoy yourself. It might be a low Gleason score, which means, you are offered Active surveillance.. I did not worry too much, as I knew that will not change the results. When I finally got the results, Pleasing 3+4, I was pleading with the nurse to please consider me for AS!

Hello, mate.

I'm sorry that you've got prostate problems, but welcome to the forum. You'll get lots of help and support here.

Getting your diagnosis, icluding waiting for PSA results, and scan and biopsy results, is nerve-racking. Most of us can understand you having difficulty sleeping and feeling anxious.

If you don't mind me asking, what is your PSA level? Do you know your Pi-rads score from your MRI scan? Have they given you a radiogical cancer staging?

Unfortunately, the time it takes to get  biopsy results seems to vary from hospital to hospital, but you should hear something fairly soon.

Please keep us updated and good luck. ๐Ÿ‘

Iโ€™m also a very recent newcomer. Had the biopsy on 18 November.

I donโ€™t think there is much to alleviate the waiting anxiety. Biopsy to results day is the most difficult time. The mind wonders to the worst possible outcome. Every time you wake the first thought is the cancer.

If you know the day the MDT meet each week I found that I could relax a bit between the meetings and expected phone call. Saturday to Wednesday as I didnโ€™t expect a call on those days.

If you donโ€™t want to wait. You could phone the CNS office they will almost certainly give you the headlines over the phone. Itโ€™s your data if you want it.

Hi Tracey.

Pi-rads 5 does indicate a very high likelihood of clinically significant prostate cancer, so you're right in preparing yourselves for those findings. Having said that, we have had cases of 5's being benign. His prostate is about three times enlarged which could account for his elevated PSA.

The diagnosis procedures are the worst time. Initially, most folk know little about the disease and get very anxious about waiting for results. I found having a few extra pints helped. ๐Ÿ™‚ You've just got to try and tell yourselves, that worrying about waiting times and the results, won't change them.

Like your husband, I have cardiac problems. Atrial fibrillation and ischemic heart disease are very common. Sometimes heart conditions can affect treatment options, impartically surgery, but its very common for men to deal with prostate cancer whilst having other equally serious disorders.

My advice would be just take one step at a time. Once you have a full diagnosis, and if it requires further treatment, you can focus on that treatment plan and recovery.

I wish you the best of luck and please keep us updated. ๐Ÿ‘

Hi Tracey, I think Adrian has pretty much covered it in a nutshell, my biopsy results came back within two weeks, I have mentioned before that I went into the meeting with the specialist nurse with the mindset that I had cancer bearing in mind my PSA and MRI results so wasn’t shocked when told I had.

I will add don’t put all your eggs in the surgery basket, listen to what the oncologist has to say before making your decision, Adrian has previously posted an excellent video on the different types of options and is well worth a watch

I wish you and your husband well, and remember your not alone the people on this forum are incredibly knowledgeable and many have been in your position and come out of the other side with optimism and a smile on their face

I hope you don’t mind me jumping in here but I just wanted to say what works for us when we are waiting for results. We make dates with our lovely friends and family as we find being with them is not only a distraction but it’s a little bit of support. Also there’s something special about walking together. It’s good to have nice days despite the anxiety you are experiencing. I hope this helps.

Hi Tracey, well I was adamant I was having surgery after speaking to the surgeon and even got myself on the waiting list, however a few days later I had a meeting with the oncologist and she explained some things that the surgeon didn’t mention, the crux of it being because of the advanced nature of my cancer surgery might not get all of the cancer leaving me with the prospect of further treatment. I’m currently on hormone therapy awaiting radiotherapy

My hospital mdt meetings are Fridays, I was told at the biopsy that the results would be 4 weeks, itโ€™s not so bad during the day as you can keep yourself occupied and to be honest Iโ€™m pretty pragmatic about it, the nights are a different story mind you

Quick update, biopsy results back and consultation booked in for next Monday, so less than 2 weeks from biopsy to consultation
Fairly impressive for the NHS

Hi,
I had MRi on 3rd Dec.  Got results (PIRADS 5 lesion to the left of my prostate) on 16th, and then biopsy on 15th Jan. So I'm currently 3 1/2 weeks into a ‘likely 3 to 5 week’ wait for biopsy results. (QE Hospital Kings Lynn which makes headlines for all the wrong reasons)

Can you explain CNS please ?

Cancer Nurse Specialist. They normally have a direct line and email you can use to ask questions etc.
I called the CNS office and got my headline biopsy from them over the phone on a Friday. The appointment to discuss the results with the doctor was not until Wednesday.

Hi Belgium,

any tips for managing the anxiety while waiting for biopsy results? My husband had his today (27 in total from 3 different areas.) We also found out today his MRI was PIRAD 5, with a 20mm lesion and his prostate is enlarged at 90grams. His PSA was 7 early Feb which prompted the urgent referral. He’s 68.

I’ve done a lot of reading the last two weeks, and am expecting a diagnosis to confirm cancer - we’ve been told 2-3 weeks by hospital. But the waiting to know what it is, and what treatment will be available to him is so stressful!

All compounded by an existing condition of controlled Atrial Fibrillation, had stents fitted due to a 70% blocked artery in 2019, controlled high blood pressure ( not so controlled these last two weeks!) and controlled high cholesterol.. and three hip replacements in 2011/12/13…poor thing! I’m worried that they won’t let him have surgery because of heart conditions which is what we would both choose if it’s an option…

I do hope you have a positive meeting with your consultant soon

Tracey xx

Thanks Adrian, I was hoping you might see this, as I’d read many of your posts and seen that you managed to have the removal despite cardiac problems.

He’s been well since being diagnosed with the Ischaemic heart disease and having stents fitted - initially in 2019, then one “moved a bit” so was redone early 2023..atrial fibrillation is permanent as they tried cardioversion and abalation unsuccessfully. But he has been retired 5 years so no stress (until a month ago!) and does regular exercise, drinks much less and I feed him healthy food so hopefully he will be deemed fit enough for surgery if the cancer is found to be contained and it’s an option for us. I know we both just “want it out” and be able to get back to our life flitting between our home in Spain and here.

I’ll let you know how we get on xx

Thank you โ˜บ๏ธ yes distraction is good, we have our gorgeous 2 year old granddaughter Tue & Wed so that’s a lovely distraction- got to tell the news to our daughter tomorrow - we’ve been holding off as don’t want her worrying like we are, but as we were supposed to be going to our house in Spain next Saturday so will have to involve her now as she was taking us to the airport.

Thanks for the input Richard, from what I’ve read surgery only an option if it’s fully contained with no spread? Won’t know for a few weeks but like you, if there’s a slightest chance the surgery wouldn’t get 100% we too would go down the HT/ radiotherapy route - no point getting side effects twice over is there?

hope you’re first month is going ok without too many side effects- it’ll make a change from me not having hot flushes if we have that option ๐Ÿ˜‚ xx

WifeTracey did husband go to Princess Royal in Burgess Hill?

I had my biopsy (24 plus 3 anaesthetic)on a Monday and was rung the Thursday after (11 days) with an appointment for the following Wednesday (17 days from biopsy).

The reason I ask is that I think the appointments officer only comes in on Thursday and Friday. So next Thursday phone call for hubby, perhaps, with biopsy findings appointment date.

I have my referral appointment at Eastbourne this week to set a date for a prostatectomy. As you can imagine I am happy with that outcome. Good luck to you both and everyone else.

Had a lovely walk on Worthing Prom this morning. โ˜€๏ธ ๐ŸŒž

Hi Stuborn

no, as we live in Southwick we are Adur health, so our appointment was Worthing. They said 2-3 weeks but as they know we were due to go to Spain on 14th, they have marked his file to say “as fast as possible “ I googled and they have their MDT meeting each Wednesday so perhaps he might catch that next week and we’ll hopefully here soon.

So glad you are “in the system” with your preferred treatment choice available, I think that once you have a treatment plan, and all your results it’s probably easier to focus on getting rid of it in the fastest time?

I’ve just had a good walk in the sunshine which has definitely lifted my mood ๐Ÿ˜ xx
