Urine sample to biopsy results meeting?

Hi knowledgeable friends

had confirmation of Consultant appointment next Friday 26 days after biopsy, was discussed at MDT meeting on Wednesday. PSA 7 in Feb (up from 3.5 over 2 years ago)  Pirad 5 on MRI - letter requests a urine sample and list of medications to be taken to appointment. is it “normal” to take a urine sample if they are going to tell us it’s cancer?

Thanks Tracey

Hi,

I wasn't asked for this prior to my appointment. Only time I was asked for a sample and medication was at my pre-op meeting prior to Brachytherapy.

Possibly a box has been ticked accidentally some where and its chucked out a standard letter that asks for these?

Worth a call to your nurse specialist to confirm before the meeting if you have a number for them?

It's often a bit of default/boilerplate text in letters for consultations at urology outpatients, which maybe no one remembered to delete in your case.

Good luck for you both with the Biopsies Results.

Had a phonecall this Tuesday 4pm offering me my prostatectomy next day in the evening at Eastbourne DG. So I am now home with 7 little scars, catheter, compression socks, bag of medicines and laxatives.

If hubby is offered the same surgery I would be happy to answer any questions from my own experience. NHS get 100% rating and it was all within timelines but I needed to do a fair bit of chasing around this last month (delayed referral by 4 weeks).

I'm happy to meet for tea/coffee somewhere in Southwick next week if needed. Good luck again.

Thanks so much, and glad your operation went well and it’s over with for you…we have our appointment at 10 today, both a bit of a mess this morning! John has some cardiac pre-existing conditions so I’m not sure if surgery will be on the cards yet, I’ll let you know our outcome xxx

That was horrible news for John and yourself Tracey. I think your plan of heading to Spain is the best initial reaction. Your nurse sounds fantastic.

I'm feeling well today. My lesion was not fully contained as I was told but abutting the edge. 18% chance of recurrence. So not quite all clear but that will be monitored with future RT if needed.

All I can add is have a good time in Spain and best of luck moving forward.

Thanks John, we don’t have a CNS yet as this consultation is for biopsy results, we’ll just take what they asked for in letter, I just wondered if it was a standard request when you get your results x

Hi Stuborn (Stuart?)

well, it was worse than we thought as PSA was only 7 leading to the investigations. 2 of 18 cores were positive at Gleason 4-4, Cambridge Group 4. John can’t have surgery due to pre-existing cardiovascular conditions, the Dr said it would be too risky. Instead he was prescribed Relugolix hormone treatment for 2-3 years, then 4 weeks radiotherapy at Preston Park in 6-9 months. They are booking a PSMA Pet scan - presumably to check if the cancer is contained, so another 2-3 week wait for that. But at least treatment can start straight away (hopefully Monday as no pharmacy had it in stock so have had to order it.) We were both left reeling by the news tbh, but our lovely nurse told us to have the weekend without reading any of the information she gave us, and wait until Monday as will process it better…thinking of booking a quick couple of weeks in our Spanish home to get over the initial news once we’ve got his medication!

hope your recovery is going well, and you’re feeling a bit better every day xxx

I’ll keep an eye out for your progress reports Stuart, and hope they got everything out the first time - it’s such a difficult choice to have to make isn’t it, as no guarantees prior to op. The next hurdle is trying to actually get the prescription! It’s not a stock item so ordered at our local chemist yesterday- called in today to be told “oh sorry it was taken off our order!” So we’ve had to order in Boots at Hove who are optimistic they’ll get it Monday 🤞 perhaps at some future stage we’ll meet up to compare notes 😂 xx
