Possibly Radiation Cystitis

Hi

So the latest from down below may well prove to be Radiation Cystitis.

Following a normal bit of masturbation, this time I ejaculated blood.  This has happened on four previous occasions over the past month and has got steadily worse.  An immediate rectal examination by our local doctor showed nothing wrong with the prostate, and a check of the penis and testicles were negative.  He has told me not to masturbate for a month to allow the fragile seminal vesicles time to recover as the condition may well be Radiation Cystitis - inflammation of essentially everything down there due to the successful radiotherapy eight years ago.  Apparently this can flare up at any point from 5-20 years post RT.  I am due a urine test in 2 weeks time and a PSA blood test in 4 weeks time.  If anything shows on these tests, it's back to the Urology Dept.  If negative, the rest from masturbation will be the cure.  Tamsulosin has to continue.

The hard part will be leaving myself alone like a monk for 4 weeks though the incentive has to be not seeing blood dripping out of the end of your cock after the almost daily session.  Does anybody else have experience of Radiation Cystitis?

Jeeper, I had very rare very severe radiation cystitis, but mine started a few weeks after my salvage RT. My symptoms were passing blood, blood clots and lots of debris in my urine and catheter.

There was quite a delay getting diagnosed and by the time it was diagnosed it had destroyed my bladder. My bladder capacity dropped to 100 mls. I cannot fill a urine sample bottle in one go. I have now had a suprapubic catheter for nine years.

I did try some hyperbaric oxygen treatment but it was a bit too late.

Thanks Chris

Brilliant answer - very many thanks.  I'm quietly concerned as you can imagine but trying to keep a lid on things pending the results of the two tests.

Hi

Sorry to hear this has happened to you. I'm just starting to have a similar sort of thing. I'm three years on  from radiotherapy and things have always been a bit sore, but it is now uncomfortable all the time and I can't sit for too long.   Ejaculation seemed to aggravate this current bout.

I am hoping to get an appointment with the Radiotherapy 'Late Effects " department for some help but the Oncology Consultant has been very dismissive and uninterested.  The GP tries to help but says it really is for the Oncology/Urology Departments to help with.

Anybody else had trouble with sitting down/driving. I'm using the specialist cushions and having hot baths, plus painkillers and anti inflammatories but only just making it bearable?

At the same timw, always trying to remember that I was lucky to get the Radiotherapy and it saved my life!

Hi Marko

You certainly seem to be facing some difficulties post RT - far more than I am but as you wisely say, we should be grateful that the RT saved our lives.  We have to live in hope that it is a passing phase, your doctor may well yet become your best option for ongoing help and access to other sources.  Good luck and thanks for the reply.

This has happened to me about 4½ years after radiotherapy, although slightly different symptoms. Didn't initially ejaculate blood, but next time I pee'd, there was blood after I finished peeing, and this went on for a couple of days. I think I did ejaculate a little blood next time too.

Urology consultant happened to call up just after peeing blood for the first time, so they had me in to check kidneys and bladder which were both fine. A flexible cystoscopy showed some blood in my prostate, and when I explained that the blood was after peeing urine (which didn't look bloody so blood wasn't present in the bladder or kidneys), they said it's coming from the prostate, and given I've had radiotherapy it's not surprising, and given my PSA is still undetectable and it's not causing excessive blood loss or problems with clots, it doesn't matter.

It happened a couple more times in the months since and I ignored it, but not again recently.

So you do need to get checked if you pass blood, but not unexpected after radiotherapy.

Thanks Andy, that all ties in almost exactly the same as me:  Blood with the dry orgasm and there after with the wee.  Very disconcerting to say the least.  I'm still waiting for the wee test results - due Monday and am still to do the next PSA blood test in ten days time.  In the meantime, I'm still being forced to be celibate.  I can tell you, it's really hard - excuse the pun.

I hope things remain as good as they possibly can be for you.

Cheers.

This is driving me nuts!  Day 23 of no sex of any sort and I'm crawling up the wall just so the doc can get a good baseline PSA test.  These are desperate times believe me.  Seemingly nobody to talk to, a blog might have been a good idea though I don't suppose it would have made good reading.  I'm not quite at the "wearing boxing gloves in bed" stage but it's not far off.  I'm trying to keep myself busy but waking up early in the morning is not helping at all.  Then there are the medical possibilities at to what is a actually wrong. What if there is something seriously wrong again? I had to give a second wee test 3 days ago due to blood in the wee still so there is clearly something wrong.  Results in 5 days time - PSA blood test day.  I'm getting nervous about that first dry orgasm after such a long time.  What if I produce blood again like I did a month ago?  Maybe I should have mentioned it to my wife but somehow, I don't want to worry her.  We've had a sexless marriage for the past 8 years - goodness knows how we are still together.  It must be love.  I'd like to think I could share the first sexual encounter with her but if I produce blood, she'd go bananas.

Of course, all this pales into insignificance to all you readers with very real and very serious cancer concerns.  Reading some of the posts are most upsetting and remind me of my very early cancer journey through Radio Therapy and Hormone Therapy and the hell that that turned out to be.  So I feel for you all and wish you well in your journeys through this diabolical condition.  Thanks for reading, I'll try not to bore you any further.

I finally got to the end of my 28 days of abstinence from any form sex yesterday and got the blood and wee test results back last night - all clear!  No further action required thankfully.  A quick practical test of equipment showed it to be in fully working order and even produced a small amount of semen.  No unusual pain to report either.

Thanks for your replies and support over the past month.  It has been a very trying experience.  Good luck with your own medical journey.
