Weight increase from hormone therapy and wegovy

Has anyone tried weight loss injections to help stop weight increase , or had advice about using jabs from anyone. I have put on about 15lbs in 15 months despite playing squash/racketball/pickleball/ walking and having a personal trainer.  My bmi is about 29 now , and I am getting pretty depressed about it. AI gave me the info below which suggests the jabs could actually be very beneficial.    https://www.google.com/search?q=protate+hormone+therapy+weight+increase+wegovy&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-gb&client=safari

Nobody has commented on this , despite hundreds reading it  - but it has worked wonderfully for me , so I am just letting you all know.

On my last visit to my oncologist I discussed this with him - he was fully supportive - apparently GLP1 , which is what Wegovy is - not only helps you lose wait  - but it also helps fight the cancer ( google it for yourselves ).   He even put  his support in writing in my notes.

I started on the Wegovy injections nine weeks ago and I have lost 14 of the 18lbs I had gained - 2 inches off my waist - it has taken very little effort apart from a little constipation (  light laxative sorted that ) .   I do about 15 hours of sport a week (at age 73 ! )  , and the weight loss has helped with this.   I also feel so much better in myself.

I suspect the lack of comments is because no one else here has been on GLP-1 agonists while undergoing hormone therapy (androgen deprivation). Which means your experience may well be useful to others in future.

A quick search suggests little scientific evidence on this currently available either. That may simply be because wide availability of the GLP-1 drugs is relatively recent; good studies take a long time to carry out since they need to recruit decent numbers of matched patients with and without that treatment and follow them for a sufficient period. It seems though studies are in progress.

As one who has undergone hormone therapy I think it would be excellent if there were clear recommendations of how to reduce the side effects. I hadn't heard of the use of Wegovy before, but there has been some discussion of the benefit of metformin (a drug used for type 2 diabetes) though I haven't heard of a hospital who routinely prescribe either.

Good luck with your progress, I take it you have had - or will have - radiotherapy as well.

Thank you

I had my radiotherapy about 18 months ago. I have been on the HT since , and at age 73 it has certainly changed my life for the worse. I am up between 4 and 8 times a night with hot flushes - sometimes I cannot get back to sleep and get up for a couple of hours. I get flushes during the day as well , and I also get cold flushes - I need to put a blanket over myself for 10 minutes every now and again, I fight the lethargy and tiredness by stretching myself with exercise - 5 hours of squash a week , 4 hours pickleball, 2 hours padel , personal trainer and gym classes. (I put on the weight despite that !) . I am really trying to fight this thing.

I had not been on the forum for a while, and I only really posted yesterday as I was feeling a bit down. I had my latest psa test - the last years had been falling ( I started at 40 !) - previous one was 0.07 and my oncologist said if I fell under 0.05 I could stop the HT - but it was 0.08 - so I have to continue !

The GLP1 has apparently been shown to assist in the treatment of many other diseases. I also have COPD (life keeps on giving ! ) , and the doctor handling that was also supportive when I asked about using Wegovy as it also aids in the treatment of that.

An interesting line of discussion- thank you.  I agree with the comment about not enough experience leading to little response. I am aware of one other user of such an approach on another forum.

HbA1c results for me mean I am classed as pre-diabetic.  Having gained weight through the process of having HT and steroids whilst on chemotherapy I am currently on a weight loss programme “prescribed” by my GP - which has a lifestyle approach (called Liva). I have lost 4kg in three months - I was about 8kg over my optimal weight.   I also exercise (indoor bike, weights resistance and walk a lot), and am trying to make use of my free PureGym membership.

It is hard work!!  Next step is blood tests to check the levels again - but these are a minimum of six monthly.

it seems that no matter what amount of exercise you do the meds just pile on the weight - I really do think there needs to be a more focused approach to this when starting treatment- and much more awareness of the potential for issues.

Best wishes - stay positive
