Hi everyone,

We just wanted to say another massive thank you to everyone who took part in our research to understand people’s thoughts on and experiences with the Prostate Cancer UK Online Community. We really valued hearing everyone’s thoughts and insights and everyone’s commitment to making this incredible community the best it can be.

Throughout this project, the research team - Kat from Common Collective and Charley from Inclusively - spoke to a broad range of people including: men living with prostate cancer, loved ones of men living with prostate cancer, people who were users of the Online Community and people who had not used the Online Community. In total we spoke with 25 people through a mix of workshops and one-to-one chats and 87 people also completed a survey.

Common Collective and Inclusively have now brought together all the things they learned in this research and shared them with the Prostate Cancer UK Online Community team to help inform future improvements.

We heard that the Online Community is a really valued space that enables people to learn from other people's lived experience. It is a reassuring place that often helps people find others in similar situations to themselves. The forum also helps people to best advocate for themselves and their loved ones.

We also heard that there were ways the Online Community could be improved to make sure it is most impactful.  The top improvements highlighted in the research included:

  • People felt the usability of the community could be improved, especially the look and feel of the site and the search functionality

  • People also felt that making it easier to find and making onboarding easier so that more people could join would be a good idea

  • More support and spaces for loved ones was also discussed as a key need

As a team, our next steps include following up on some areas of the feedback to ensure we fully understand those user needs and to use the findings of the research to inform a development plan for the Online Community. We will keep you updated about any developments.

Thank you again to everyone who took part and generously gave their time to the research, your feedback and insights will help to shape the development of this vital and invaluable space.

If you have any questions about this research or future development plans, please email [email protected] or feel free to DM me directly here 😊

All the best,

Payge – Peer Support Senior Officer (Online Community)

Hi Adrian,

Yes, it's an increasing issue that many UK health charities are seeing in forum spaces. It's on our list of areas to review!

Many thanks,

Hello.

Thank you, for the update.

Is it possible to have some sort of filter that enables moderators to instantly detect bogus posts, those with hidden links to gaming sites. Instead of relying on savvy regulars to report them?

Hi Adrian,

No problem! We're reviewing a list of platform requirements and building a development plan as we speak - spam management is definitely an important area. We don't remove users or posts unless they violate our forum rules but we're also reviewing those. However, any reported users are noted down and monitored. Thank you and all of the other regular reporters for supporting moderation!😊

All the best,

I hope that you can resolve the problem because currently this forum is being increasingly used by fraudsters who are using it to advertise their "dodgy wares" and presumably profiteering  at the expense of genuine people looking from help and support.  It's disgraceful.
