Is NeuroSAFE available on NHS?

Hi everyone

Can't say I'm happy to be here! But it looks like a supportive community.

I was diagnosed in early May 2026 with a Gleason score of 3+4. My PSA was just over 10 . The recommendation is i have a radical prostatectomy and have been Googling since then to understand the options. I have been referred to Guys hospital in London and am waiting on the first consultation.

I have heard a lot about NeuroSAFE helping with the recovery, but understand this is only available privately - does anyone know if it available on the NHS ?

Would also welcome thoughts from those who have considered this and how you decided on the best way forward.

thanks!

Only place I know that does NeuroSAFE on the NHS is the Lister at Stevenage.

A similar procedure is Histolog, which doesn't require the pathologist in theatre, but they access the scans in theatre from over the Internet. The Royal Surrey at Guildford have started doing this.

Its was approved by NICE fairly recently I think. I had my surgery done privately at Guys London Bridge so they definitely have the facilities because I had neuroSAFE but it’ll be down to the consultant I suspect. I would ask the question explicitly. It’s a perfectly legit question to ask them directly. Also try UCLH who are just up the road from Guys as they are also a centre of excellence for cancer treatment and pioneering certainly from a private perspective.

The three hospitals that were involved in the NeuroSAFE trial which I think concluded in 2025 was UCLH, The Lister and Barts.

I definitely wouldn’t have the procedure done without Nerosafe because I consider it flying blind by not having it -  it should really be an  industry standard. I think the things slowing the rollout is many NHS trusts decentralised pathology whereas neurosafe requires the pathologist to be almost in the ‘next room’.

Definitely make early enquiries and let us know how you get on.
