Hi all!

I'm new here at the community and wanted to share my HIFU story.

I was attending a study that was aimed at finding a method to distinguish prostate cancer that needed treatment, from the non lethal ones.

So I had a PSA test in 2019 when I was 57, with the low value of 2.4. But since this was a study I also had a MRI and biopsy done as well. The results came back and showed that I had an incapsulated cancer (T1) in five places with the Gleason sum 4-3.

I left the study and became a patient due to these results. I was offered two treatments, Radical prostate ectomy or Radiation, which are standard treatments in Sweden.  I started to google the side effects of both treatments, and I had a hard time to accept them.

After a while I found out that there was another study nearby focused on HIFU, which offered milder side effects. I applied to participate to this HIFU study, and was approved after sending them my journals.

My first focal treatment was in 2020, my PSA levels dropped and then slowly rose again to 5.1 at it's highest. after additional MRI and biopsies a small cancer was found just on the edge of the previously treated area.

That spot was treated again with a Re-HIFU in august 2024. Complete chart of my PSA levels here!

My HIFU experience so far:

Erektion is the same compared to before treatment.

Ejaculation have less liquid, and thinner.

Different feeling during orgasm, but still good.

No urine or other kind of leakage.

Sounds similar to old Barry ie radiation followed by HIFU salvage therapy. Make sure you keep an eye on your PSA.

Hi Peter,

From my reading of what you say, it looks to me as though you had HIFU administered twice as Focal Treatment for your Prostate Cancer as I did but I had Radiotherapy as a primary treatment, so HIFU as a salvage treatment for failed RT in my case. I have been told that as I have been subject to heavy radiation and HIFU twice, the Oncologists would not administer further Focal treatment should MRI and increasing PSA show a further tumour even if this was considered significant. It will then be my option to do nothing or have the tumour treated by Hormone therapy or possibly Chemotherapy. Should it be found that you develop Prostate confined significant tumour, you may be able to have further Focal Treatment or Radio treatment. With HIFU, it can only treat where the probe can reach, so another form of Focal Treatment might be necessary, such as Cryotherapy. Well, let's hope you don't need further treatment. So as francij says, important that you have regular PSA checks and probably annual MRI or whatever interval is considered appropriate for you.

I hope things go well for you.

Hi Barry!

Thats correct, I've had two HIFU treatments, nothing else, and my cancer was located within reach of the probe. I do follow my PSA closely, as you can see if you click the link in my first post. My biggest concern right know is that I'm not quite sure  what to expect from my future PSA tests. I know that there always gonna be PSA in my blood stream, since I have a working prostate. And it's probably going to increase with age I guess.

Thanks for your input guys, means a lot to me.

Best wishes

//Peter
