Why is the UK the only country not to issue gene testing advice?

USA, Germany & France all updated prostate cancer guidance to include genetic testing for all metastatic and also high-risk cases

UK NICE has not updated its prostate guidance NG131 since 2021 - not planning to do so for another 18 months

The current UK NICE guidance does not mention genetic testing to see whether men with prostate cancer and BRCA2 defects can benefit from PARP inhibitors.

Why is the UK so far behind on this?

Hi NorthernMan,

I so agree with your frustration. As a PC sufferer I do find the general response to PC unacceptable in this country. As a regular on this forum I read so many tales that make me feel that PC is not taken seriously enough. The fact is so many see this cancer as not that serious as the general approach is 'it's a cancer that you don't die of'. This is obviously not true. I am also dismayed by a lot of the after treatment. My recovery from RARP started okay including having a phone number for the recovery team. I used the number twice and got good help, but the third time someone answered the phone and told me it was a wrong number. I won't even start on the woeful ED support.

Getting back to the question - my answer is that until there is a change of priorities then PC will always be seen as not important enough.
