Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) are currently working on the GIFT (UnderstandinG the Impact of Financial Toxicity) project, a five-year UK-wide research study, funded by Wellcome, exploring the financial impact of cancer on people living with and beyond cancer. The project examines how cancer-related financial strain affects wellbeing, quality of life, and everyday living experiences across the UK. Ethical approval has been granted by Queen’s University Belfast.
In summary, GIFT has 4 main components:
- UK-wide cross-sectional survey (Completed, click here for findings);
- Cohort study (commencing August 2026), a survey conducted over a 12-month period examining the financial impact of a new diagnosis of cancer;
- Qualitative study (commencing August 2026); one-to-one interviews with patients and carers about their experiences of living with cancer and how it has affected different parts of their daily life, including any impacts on work or finances;
- Co-produce & evaluate practical solutions with stakeholders to reduce the financial impact of cancer (planned for 2027).
Researchers at QUB are preparing for phase 2 and 3 of the project, which will help them better understand how financial experiences, as well as quality of life and living experience, change over time following a cancer diagnosis.
Financial incentives are being offered to participants of both the cohort and qualitative studies (in points 2 and 3 above). Please consider supporting this important project as we feel it aligns to the important work that Prostate Cancer UK do with cancer patients and their families.
