Hi again, Graham.

If you're having RARP. You may have to travel further than you want, mate.

"Access to robotic-assisted surgery across NHS hospitals in England is uneven, creating a “postcode lottery” for patients, according to new analysis by the Royal College of Surgeons of England"

Hi Graham,

You have the right to ask who-ever is treating you for whichever hospital you prefer that offers prostatectomy.  You might consider what capability they have and they should advise.   10yrs when I had surgery I was offered a hospital that didn't do robot surgery but I could have asked for it.  The robot was 25 miles away in the Pennines and my treatment was in mid December so I chose non-robot surgery as my wife would never find it and I felt no association with it.

I found that the Consultant Urologist I was seeing was agreeable to whatever I asked as they seem to like you to make the choices.

.....................................................................................................

I was diagnosed at our large local hospital only 2 miles away but surgery was centralised at another hospital 15 miles away.  I was surprised to learn some people travelled from the Lake District and past the hospital I was at to one 10 miles further away, it must have been 50 miles for some.

The only times I went were to have an interview with the surgeon that lasted about 15 minutes.  Then for an operation pre-assessment followed by the operation.   I could drive to them all except going home from the op when my wife picked me up.   I know others who got an NHS minibus there and back every time.

I also elected to have my psa tests and clinics at the surgery hospital as I felt they must have more knowledge and in case I needed further work, the radiotherapy is there too.  10yrs later I still go there for blood tests and get telephone appointments every 4 months now.

I could have my blood tests done at the GP which goes to the local hospital.   However the nurse would need to ring up to get the results as the lcoal NHS IT doesn't link to the surgery hospital.   The NHS app doesn't link to the surgery hospital so I don't find out quickly.

If your hospital has a Urology Dept they could likely take over post operation but I didn't want that.
