Hi, my name is Mick and I've had a very brief brush with the process of being investigated for suspected prostate cancer.
Im white British, 60 years old and had a raised PSA of 4.8 which triggered the battery of tests and waiting for results that many men have to endure while in a pretty scared state of mind. Thankfully the biopsy came back negative, but im still having regular PSA tests. My older brother is currently on palliative care with metastatic PCa.
I found the information and support here on the forum was incredibly helpful to me and my wife when I found myself in a world of strange new terms and jargon.
I fully understand why a section has been set up especially for black men and of course their partners and families. PCa can affect every man but it does have different and more menacing implications for black men, which means you guys might need more support or at least support that caters to your circumstances better than a generic group. Also culturally specific advice and support must be so much more valuable than that available in a general forum.
I never wanted to come to a forum like this, but having a PCa scare meant I needed to. I found it welcoming, reassuring and useful. If a place on the forum site for black men means that just one person feels the same kind of support and reassurance then it will have been worrh creating it.
We often say this is a club no one wants to join, but we make everyone welcome anyway. So welcome along and please take every bit of help and advice available.
Best regards Mick
