Cancer spread to Spine

Hello,

My dads prostate cancer had spread to his lungs, we found this out in Jan 2026.  On Thurdsay last week dad was taken to A&E at Royal Berks hospital where a MRI scan showed that this has also now spread to spine.  I will be phoning Oncology today and Sue Ryder. Dad is hopefully coming home this Wednesday.  I am anxious about how I cope and what to expect going forward.  Dad is 88yrs and the non oncology consultant advised to sign DNR form.  I feel totally at loss with lack of information from Oncology.   Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Gaynor.

I'm very sorry to hear about your dad's condition. My dad had prostate cancer, and when he was 88 years old, he was in a very similar position to yours.

I contacted his GP, emergency adult social services and MacMillan. The McMillan nurses were brilliant.  They all ensured  rhat he was made as comfortable as possible

Later, when we decided it was time  to move dad from his home to palliative care in a nursing home, he peacefully passed away.

I can't praise enough the help we were given at this awful time, especially from MacMillan.

Hi Gaynor, sorry to hear about your dad. My OH at aged 80 is in a position of no further treatment options. This allowed us a quick referral to the community palliative care in the community team - the Macmillan as it used to be called. They are amazing, come into the home, give us time and access to consultant care and we had delivery of a hospital bed in a couple of days which has really helped. We are still tritrating medication but they are there for us in a way that other medical teams are not. They are very attentive for pain medication, support and put the whole family into the support system at our local Myton hospice care. Dear Gaynor, I'm very sorry to read your post. I hope you can find strength in knowing that your care for your father would mean more to him than words can describe. I do not have any practical advice for this stage, but I know that some partners and families remain on this forum who can share their experiences. There were a few, if I recall correctly, whose comments made me think that pain management may be better at a hospice facility instead of at home, at least that idea stuck in my mind. WIsh you strength in these difficult times.
