I joined in oooooooh.............. 2008. Had to check as it was so long ago! I was on HT at the time and was researching extensively on what PCa treatments were available worldwide. I realised what a complex and multifaceted subject Prostate Cancer was with evolving and refined ways to treat and many other aspects and considerations. I learnt much from the prolific posters on the forum back in the day and met some of them at the meetings we had at Birmingham and at Leicester annually. A member was able to get their Oncologist to attend on more than one of these meetings to talk and answer questions and there was also a talk by the late Jane Plant on fighting cancer by selective diet etc, on one occasion. Members came from far and wide, some with their partners. Despite many having advanced PCa and of course this being much discussed, there was banter, mirth and comrardery. The very nice man who organised the event over several years was glad to pass organising the meeting over to this Charity who adopted it for one occasion. It was pointed out to them, well before the event, as I can personally attest, that numbers would be down if there would not be a speaker. This proved to be the case, and to such an extent that Prostate Cancer UK never organised another. Sad really, as some members additionally stayed overnight at the venue before or after the meeting. Many if not most of these men have since died but those that remain we will remember.
There are many men who read what is posted, even if they are not members or they may be members but do not post. In either case, along with those who post frequently or occasionally, the forum provides information and support for those that want or need it. The combined pool of knowledge increases as members contribute, even by askng or answering questions. detailng experiences and advising what they have learnt about new ways of diagnosing and treating PCa and cancer related matters. So hopefully, the Community will continue to be able tto support men and their families.
