First PSA test ...... referred to Urology

Afternoon - hopefully im worrying over nothing (but I guess that's what everyone says)

I dont know of family history as my father and grandfather both past at the age of 47 due to heart disease.

Im pretty active 51yr old, I go to the gym 4 times a week and walk 12k steps a day - done Triathlons/ ironman and marathon swims in the past.

25/9/26 - I  went to a private doctors for Fatigue and achy joints elbows/wrists & Knees. The doctor recommended a blood test with PSA.

26/9/26 - PSA results 4.9 and have been referred to Urology. (I was told that was high)

5/10/26 - Went to see consultant and had DRE and he thought that was fine (I think)

He has requested another PSA which im having tomorrow (8/10/26) and then a MRI if it comes out high again.

I asked him what a reading of 4.9 means and he said 'probably prostate cancer' which was a massive shock to me.

I've been worried, emotional and in a daze since.

Thanks everyone for any advice.

Hi Mark

So sorry to hear your story.  You can check. out our individual stories by clicking on our names or avatar.

It does seem a little early in the process for any opinions etc but you are doing all of the right things.  I/we know how very very difficult this stage is - the anxiety/not knowing/catastrophising etc - we do get it.

Don't forget you can speak to one of the wonderful support folk on the helpline.

In the meantime it is a matter of trying to hold it al together and await any results.

But try and keep up the exercise regime - it is your strongest defence at the moment!

Best wishes - stay positive

Hi, Mark.

I'm sorry that you are anxious over having possible prostate problems, but welcome to the forum, mate.

Your doctor is correct, your slightly elevated PSA could indicate prostate cancer, but it could also be caused by other non cancerous prostate conditions.

Good luck with your further tests, and please keep us updated.👍

8/10/26 - PSA test done again, I now have to wait 7 days for the result

The wait (especially when starting out with potential PCa) is very hard. It gets easier once you get used to all that after some time, but doesn't ease the tension.

But even if your 2nd PSA comes out elevated, until they've done an MRI and biopsy, they won't know for sure. Biopsy being the key stage in that.

Good luck and hope you come out clear.
