Experiences of RALP - please help

Hi,

I've recently been diagnosed with locally advanced prostate cancer and one of the treatment options is RALP. I'd be really grateful to hear a few words from anyone who's been through it. What was it like? Was it better or worse than you expected? Did it throw up any problems that you hadn't foreseen and, if so, how did you deal with them?

I also have a particular niche interest. I have a long-standing eye condition which has left my one remaining eye very delicate and susceptible to damage from inflammation - anywhere in my body. I had a routine hernia op last year and the resulting cascade of inflammation cost me the right to drive. I don't want to lose any more sight, and wonder how much inflammation people have experienced after RALP. I'm also very doubtful about having my head below my body for 3 hours or so in surgery. Any thoughts?

I'm going to have appointments with surgeon and oncologist in the next week or so, so don't hold back if you have a point of view. I have hugely appreciated those of you who have already contributed to conversations on this sort of topic. I have read quite a few now and found them very helpful. Let me know if I've missed anything that might answer my questions. A big thank you to everyone.

Hi Bret.

I'm sorry that you've joined 'Our Club' but welcome to the forum.

Here's my story of RARP.

I had a heart condition and they were worried that the Trendelenburg position during surgery might produce problems, but lucky enough it didn't.

Good luck, mate. 👍

Thank you Adrian, that is both encouraging and useful. I very much appreciate such a quick reply... and for introducing me to Herr Trendelenburg. Now I've got a proper label I can check that out.

An MDT that met this morning has taken RALP off the table. They seem to have reached the same conclusion I was rapidly getting to: that my eyesight would be lucky to survive the operation, let alone the recovery. So it's hormone treatment on Friday, followed by external beam radiotherapy, if I think it's safe enough.

Many thanks to anyone who has spent time considering a reply to this. Adrian was right: this is not a club I wanted to join, but it's good to know there are people out there...
