Radiation Cystitis Bladder

Hi All

Was diagnosed with PC in Oct 2020 (psa384).

Had radiotherapy to the prostate in Feb 21.

Just developed a sudden dose, and fairly bad dose of Radiation Cystitis to the bladder, causing bleeding,  blood clots and an inability to pass urine. Reading about it, it can happen upto 20 years after radiotherapy treatment,  mines took 5 yearsnto appear.

Anyone else had these issues and if so what was done, hospital I'm in is just saying wait and see but I see online , various barrier interventions, etc, anyone had these, did they work.

Any help would be massively appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Stuart,

You might find it helpful to talk this through with our Specialist Nurses. You can contact them on 0800 074 8383 (Monday – Friday 9am-5pm, Wednesdays 10am-5pm).

We also have a Peer Support service that may be able arrange for you to speak with someone to discuss this. You can read more about it here One-to-One Peer Support Service | Prostate Cancer UK.

Best wishes,

I had a similar experience a few months after SRT, as said it is called radiation cystitis. My hospital didn't recognise the problem and by the time it was diagnosed it was too late for an effective treatment. My bladder capacity shrunk to below 100 mls, (one hundred mls). Mine was very severe and I now have a permanent suprapubic catheter. You could try some hyperbaric oxygen treatment. I got some advice from the pelvic radiation disease association charity.

Thanks Chris

You want referring to a urology department which deals with radiation cystitis.
There are some newer treatments for this now, whereas it used to be very difficult to treat.
