Brother's advanced prostate cancer

Hello

My brother was diagnosed 18 months ago and his chemo treatment has stopped as it is no longer having any effect. I spoke to him yesterday and he is understandably struggling mentally and physically - he is anaemic and struggling with his bowel. He seems to be losing interest in life so hard for him and his wife.  Sharing to see if anyone wants to share advice on how best I can support him. T

Hi sorry to hear about your brother. It is hard to know how you can help. Most times we'd ask his age,  his diagnosis details but these are only help answer details about the disease, not how to support him.

I guess maybe if we knew a bit more about the numbers, PSA, Gleason etc, what treatment he has had so far we would be able to suggest other treatments he might ask for.

I think the only way to find out how to support him may be to ask him, and hope he engages in the conversation. These might not be things he'd want to share with his sister, but if for example, you found incontinence or erectile dysfunction were the cause of his low mood, we could certainly offer advice.

If it is depression, which is very plausible in his situation, then maybe he should go to his GP for medication like sertraline. It can be hard to get a man to realise help is available. Maybe that is how you can support him best, find out what is troubling him most and then point him towards other support services.

Hi T,

I have 2 sisters with me on this journey.

1. Does my head in always on about it.

2. Knows 1 does my head in so never asks.

I prefer 2.
