Feedback Appointment NHS

Been on Active Surveilance for 4 years with Urology Nurse Phone call appointments as follow up which has worked well. However recent changes showing on MRI and Biopsy have led to a follow up appointment today with a NHS Consultant face to face.. Expecting.to need some form of treatment but only allocated 20 minutes with him which seems very very little tome to get feedback, ask.constructive questions and think.about next steps.. wondering how other NHS Trusts work?

Hi, Fishy.

I'm sorry to see that you may have disease progression that requires further treatment, but welcome to the forum. At least your active surveillance has given you four years free of any possible side effects of radical treatments.

I was in a similar position to you. Initially diagnosed PSA 7, T2a, safely prostate confined, Gleason 6 (3+3). I went on AS. My three monthly PSA checks only fluctuated slightly. So I was surprised when a follow up MRI detected capsular breach and a subsequent biopsy showed significant change. Then T3a Gleason 8 (3+5), later upgraded to Gleason 9 (4+5).

Like you, I just got a phone call and a letter to see a consultant for ten minutes, to give me the bad news. I selected surgery. I had a much longer and in depth 30 minute consultation with my surgeon, about a month later.

I'm in North Lincs.

Good luck, mate.  👍

Thanks for getting back and hope all is well with yourself. You are right that 4 years with a normal lifestyle has been a real positive . However the more I learn the more questions I have and 20 minutes just doesn't seem long.  Never been good at waiting  - roll on 3.00pm today !!! Hopefully a cup of tea, a slice of cake and chat about Newcastle United but back in the teal world !

Hi Fishy

Hope the appointment goes well this afternoon..

I can recommend having a look at the publications section on the PCUK site - there are documents covering all aspects and you can download them as pdf files ahead of ordering hard copies. Great clear source of information and they have lists of questions as well ( that is if you need any more!).

I had my list of queries and checked against them as we were going along to see if we were covering them off in the discussion.  I do know I was waiting past my appointment time on a couple of occasions- earlier appointments had overrun and I never felt rushed in the discussion with the consultant oncologist.  I am under QE hospital in Birmingham.

Don’t forget to check our stories by clicking on our names or roundel.

Best wishes - stay positive

Oh, I forgot to mention. If you have to come off AS, they'll probably be no need to rush choosing treatment. This is an excellent video, showing most treatment options and their possible side effects. It's London based  but most of the treatments are available throughout the UK.

My own consultant said he got 20 min clinic slots before treatment, and 15 min slots afterwards. Apparently, this is longer than normal.
