Gleason 6  with 3 3 score for last 4 years on Active Surveillance but last MRI and biopsy are now Gleason 7 with 4 3 score. Discussing treatments but Dr has also requested a Bone Scan. Fit 68 year old who plays Padel, Pickle and football weekly. Have had back issues but with streches and Ibruprofin manage reasonably and pain goes. Worried as Bone Scan is apparently not common. Thoughts ?

Bone scan is very common. The only people who don't get one are those where they know it is metastatic i.e. PSA in the hundreds, and bones already crumbling.

I think it is a relatively cheap test, is an extremely good indicator of metastasis, so can quickly inform the treatment choice. That is why nearly everyone gets a bone scan before treatment starts.

Hi Fishy,

Bone scan is very common, I have had 3. It is used to diagnose metastatic cancer and to monitor treatment response. Even people like me with a psa in the thousands at diagnosis have them. My bones were in a bad state but I'm still here over 5 years later and fairly well. I want to say try not to worry but I know that probably sounds impossible.

Best wishes, Mac.

Hi Fishy,

I don't want to worry you, but the way you describe yourself in your posts, you could be describing me. About treatment options, my multi disciplinary team (MDT) recommended hormone treatment plus Enzalutamide, my oncologist strongly pushed for Chemo. I went with the MDT. I was in shock as I too had never been ill. In hindsight, I think I was too ill for Chemo.

Mac.
