MRI results and biopsies taken

Hello,

I am Sarah and brand new to this community.

My dad started having urinary issues about a month ago and has had a catheter in since then. His PSA was 12 and his MRI showed 3 areas of concern two scores 5 and the other 4. The consultant said it is contained within the prostate but did say Lymph nodes in the area are swollen. He has had biopsies taken today and results due in the 5th November.

I don’t really know what I want to ask on here but 5th November seems a million miles away to wait for answers,

Thanks for reading

Sarah

Hello, Sarah

I'm sorry to hear that your dad is having prostate problems. However, it's great that in order to support him you've joined us. Welcome to the forum.

How old is your father? If he's in his seventies his PSA is elevated, but not too drastically.

The MRI scores you given are called pi-rads, unfortunately 5 means there is a very high chance of significant prostate cancer.

However, MRI and PSA results are only indicators. They can be both have high scores/levels that can be caused by non-cancerous conditions like prostate inflammation (prostatitis) and Benign Hyperplasia (an enlarged prostate)

We have had a few blokes on here that had pi-rads 5 and elevated PSA which were caused by these non cancerous conditions.

Only your dad's biopsy result, can tell IF he's got cancer and IF he has, how aggressive it's likely to be.

I'm little surprised, as your dad has swollen lymph nodes, that the consultant seems so confident, that IF he has cancer, it's prostate confined. Having said that, lymph nodes can also get enlarged or swollen by other non-cancerous conditions.

Most of us would tell you that these initial scans, tests and biopsies to diagnosis the problem are the most difficult time. Usually, in these early stages, folk know little about the disease, and waiting for, and trying to understand results, can be frustrating and confusing.

My advice would be take one step at a time.

If your dad has just had his biopsy he might get be a bit sore and uncomfortable, but that's normal. To get his results by 5th November, is very good.

Please keep us updated and best of luck to you both.👍

Hello,

thank you so much for your reply.

Dad is 78 but doesn’t look it at all and been in relatively good health.

May be it’s the way I asked about if the abnormalities were confined to the prostate? I could be interpreting his response wrong.

Dads quite uncomfortable but has taken some pain killers so hopefully he can get a good nights sleep.

This certainly seems like a very supportive place to be at this worrying time, so thank you ❤️
