I don't know what to do

Hello All, I'm hoping for advice on a path for my cancer treatment which so far has been somewhat confused.

I was diagnoised in 2009 and sine then my PSA has increased a litte year on year until it reached 14. I had 5 truss biopsys and the template biopsy found a tiny tumour in 2 out of the 40 samples that were taken, gleeson score is 7 (4+3).

Consumtant told me it wasn't bad and gave me a year to decide what to do but advised me to have a radical prostectomy which I really didn't want. I have no symptoms whatsoever and this was only discovered after a routing health check in 2009 by my employers heath care provider.

After considering options I was referred to Christie 's Manchester for SHDR treatment where the consultant there was of the opinion that it was not life threatenting but his radiographer was keen to do the SHDR. Had the pre op, went for the procedure but after hours under the anaesthetic and tubes pushed into every orifice the procedure wasn't done due to body hibicus I think is the wording, which means I'm a fat b****rd and they couldn't get an accurate image. I have all the side effects, painful urination, swollen abdomen, etc but none of the benefits. Shame.

Before the procedure I was on hormone therapy and my PSA is now 1.4 but I guess I still have the cancer.

I'd like some idea what to do next. Like everyone, I want minimal side effects and the most effective treatment. I've just begun a new relationship after the death of my wife a few years ago and want to enjoy my remaining life to the maximum. age being considered of course.

I just want to know where I can go for unbiased advice and possible alternatives to shotgun blast radiotherapy.

Hi Brabazon,

If you click on my picture it will give you my diagnosis and the treatment I choose at the time.I am eight months into my journey and doing well so far with a drop of PSA 2.19 -0.59,I was offered the full radical removal at the Lister in Stevenage but also had a meet with the brachytherapy surgeon that performed my treatment in the end at Mount Vernon in September, like you i was Gleason 7 but with a 3+4.

I cannot tell you what to choose but it may be worth getting some more advice before you commit to one or the other.

Regards John.

Have you already viewed the Toolkit from this site.

There might be helpful advice on there, or at least mention of possible treatments

Like Johntheprint, my John also opted for seed Brachytherapy but then he didn't have to have hormone therapy first.

My John is now 76 and three years on from the implants and due for a followup in July (following previous cancellation grrrr!)

He is fit and well (for his age haha) and has had no major side effects.

ED is manageable with Sildenafil

(and by the way Johntheprint, we once asked our GP for a couple of extra tablets explaining that we were going on holiday and he gave then to us. Fortunately it stayed the same so repeat prescriptions are for 12 x 50mg tablets so might be worth asking for them like that)

Good luck Brabazon

Hi Johsan

That sounds like a good idea as I have cancelled the Tamulosin  (not taken one since 27 April) and saving them money but I am not seeing my practice doctor next only the specialist in June so i could ask him to up the dose and throw in a battery and jump leads. (Ha Ha).

Regards John.
