Targeted Biopsy

I was just wondering if anyone could help me with this. I had a trans-rectal ultrasound guided biopsy recently and was really supprised to see on the discharge notes that "no targeted biopsies taken" was written. This supprised me as in my notes it stated that the urologist was unsure from the MRI if the suspicious areas was inflammation or cancer - I'm a long time sufferer with prostitis.

I understand that small samples of tissue from my prostate would be collected, but it baffles be that any area of suspicion would not be targeted?

Could this be because under closer scrutiny it was deemed unnecessary? Negligence

Many thanks,

Chris.

They are unlikely to have set everything up, got you on the bed, stuck a probe up and then not taken any biopsies. Maybe something has been lost in translation. Or perhaps the suspicious area was in the region that cannot be reached by trans-rectal route. Best person to ask is your urologist or, if one was allocated, the specialist nurse.

What were the results? What is the plan for you next?

Hi Kierkegaard,

Thanks for responding. I had as planned the 15 or so biopsies taken. In the discharge forms it stated that these 15 or so biopsies were carried out. That there was a clear view and no "targeted biopsies" were taken. I'm curious why, as one would have thought that the area of suspicion would have been biopsied.

It's only been 10 days so not had results.

I think it will come down to semantics - that what they mean by ‘targeted biopsies’ is different to what you mean. Only your urologist or nurse can shed light on it.

... well, that's the only thing that makes sense so far.  Thanks
