Treatment options for my dad

Evening all, firstly I appreciate this site so much. My dad (73) diagnosed two weeks ago.

He had aching ground, doc sent for bloods, PSA 12, after two weeks 14. Sent for MRI, 2 shadows...Biopsy taken and found to be stage T2..

When talking to oncologist, they’ve now said T3a (although surgeon doesn’t agree and still thinks T2).

Been given 4 options:

surgery

Hormone therapy and radio

Brachytherapy and hormone therapy

PACE-C trial.

Would just appreciate your views, experiences and help me help dad to make his decision.. (think he’s wrong side of 70 for surgery)..

Thank you so much in advance.

It sounds like he has had meetings with the urologist and the oncologist so presumably he has had the opportunity to discuss & fully understands the possible side effects of all the treatments?

They wouldn't have offered surgery if they thought he wasn't fit enough to cope with it. On the other hand, to find yourself wearing continence pads at 73 might be a bit difficult. If it was my dad, I would probably be pointing him towards brachytherapy or the PACE trial ... he could have another 20 years or more in him!

Hi

I was 70 when the doctor picked up blood in my urine in a private medical  nothing to do with prostate cancer but renewal of my 7.5 ton driving licence so i was sent for tests that came up with 5 cores of 20 positive, PSA 2.19 Gleason 3+4=7 and was offered robotic surgery or brachytherapy.

I looked up possible side affects on both treatments and felt Brachytherapy would have less problems overall.

I had Brachytherapy in September 2016 and found the the two days in hospital ideal for me returning home with some discomfort a few pain killers.

My PSA is down to 0.08 in December 2020 and my specialist signed me of in January 2021.If you click on my Avatar you can see my journey so far.

Good luck John.

It seems the view that the cancer Is T2, rather than T3A has been accepted as the latter figure would not meet the requirements of the C PACE trial. Given the choice and doubt about staging, I would plump for Brachytherapy, augmented by EBRT if considered appropriate but just my reasoning.
