New Journey

Hello everyone, just starting on this journey and trying to be positive. 68 just retired last month after 50 yrs in the MoD and following Biopsy have been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. I have just had CT & Bone scans and am awaiting results along with outcome of MDT. So far been told I possibly have T2c or T3a, CPG3, Gleason score 4+3, PSA of 30, and that's about as far as I've got. To complicate things I have Total Knee replacement surgery next weekend (still in 2 minds whether I should go ahead with this surgery while waiting for treatment plan for Prostate) I have a dull back pain in the mornings which from what I've read doesn't bode well. The Prostate Cancer website is excellent & I would like to crack on with treatment and had a general query around personal experiences of side effects of treatment and any experiences of clinical trials?. Perhaps too general a question but any info would be appreciated before next appt post MDT discussion.

Thanks for reading

Thank you Jeff, Adrian, Dave. I've been waiting for knee surgery for a couple of years and reluctant to cancel though didn't want it to impact Prostrate treatment. I have some phone calls to make tomorrow !. Thanks again.

Hi Carl.

Welcome to the forum. Sorry that you've had to find us but glad you have.

I'd definitely crack on with your knee surgery mate. I'm not medically trained but I doubt your back problem is related to the cancer.

I'm afraid I think it's a case of having to wait for your scan results and MDT meeting results. The waiting is what most of us find so frustrating.

Best of luck.

Morning Carl.
I can only give you my opinion, but totally understand your dilemma of having your knee surgery during this prostrate treatment period.
My treatment of surgery happened about 6 weeks post m d t meeting, I had my surgery in Wakefield west York’s but as we know different postcodes have different timescales. Perhaps the best thing would be to speak to either the surgeon doing your knee surgery or the surgeon/oncologist in charge of your prostrate treatment. You of course have to decide on the treatment you wish to have i e surgery or other. Although prostrate cancer is slow spreading my option would be to sort the prostrate issues out before the knee if that was my only choice, to give you a guide on my recovery I was fully continent after about a week, walking around the village 2 days after leaving hospital then steadily increasing my activity over the next few weeks & back to my usual running of 3 miles a day at the 6 week period. I think radio therapy is over a longer period of about a month of treatments. On your back ache problems at our ages of 68/69 backache can be just a wear & tear issue & totally nothing to do with the pc. Until your meeting with the specialist, the treatment they offer & of course what treatment you decide on, things cannot be decided.
Best of luck with whatever you decide.
Jeff.

My prostatectomy was 5 months after diagnosis. As you rightly said it's a decision about priorities and timescales. Until you know what treatment the MDT advises its difficult to make an informed decision. How long would the knee surgery be delayed if it were cancelled. How does the knee problem impact your life?  When would your cancer treatment start? How much would the recovery period of the knee op impede your cancer treatment plan?

On reflection I should have advised, crack on with your knee operation, if it doesn't impede your cancer treatment plan. Apologises for causing any confusion.

The dull back pain is almost certainly nothing to do with prostate cancer. Metastatic prostate cancer usually has PSA in the 100s and is less likely with a T2 or T3a.

I would get the knee surgery done. It needs doing and if you miss this chance you will probably be on a waiting list for a few years.

Morning Carl.
Both Dave & Adrian are correct, your knee problems do need rectifying, the point I was making is that on the timescale of my surgery (about 6 weeks post m d t meeting) prostrate treatment could be due on the same time as your proposed knee surgery, that is of course which treatment you decide on. Has you say phone calls need to be made before you can move forward. As I said before, I went down the surgery route & I feel after 6 weeks post surgery I could have gone through the knee surgery, but have my doubts I would have been able to go through the prostrate surgery 6 weeks after the knee surgery. This is only my opinion & once you have made your phone calls you will be in a better place to decide.
All the very best on whichever you decide, keep us updated.

Hi

I am due to have robotic prostatectomy on 20th March. I am concerned primarily about incontinence.  I am a fit 65 year old who walks 5 miles daily, no weight issues . Gleason 7. Psa 4.23. Had Bone,CT, no spread apparently. Any advice welcome  , particularly on the continence front. Thanks and best wished to you all .

Hello mate.

Welcome to the forum.

Following prostatectomy, incontinence problems can vary enormously. I was told by a CNS most men are 'back to normal' after about 6 months. I was lucky and was dry through the night almost immediately. It took me 7 months to be completely pad free.

Thank you for your response. Good to hear you are doing well.

Metastatic cancer does definitely not have to have PSA in the 100s

in my experience it’s 40s
