I have a biopsy next week, followed at some time by a bone scan. What side effects do I expect after the biopsy?

Hi Steve.

Our site gives a good insight into biopsies and side effects.

Hi Steve

you’ll be a bit tender for a couple of days, have pink wee for a day or so, and don’t be alarmed if you ejaculate what looks like ketchup for a week or two! Otherwise you should be fine mate.

Good luck 👍

My biopsy was in the morning at 10, I was back at my desk working by 1. Not the best experience in the world but 100% necessary. The clinical team will guide you every step of the way

Hi Steve,

Biopsy’s nothing to worry about IMO, you just kind of leave your modesty at the door when your legs go up in stirrups🤣🤣🤣 But I have to say the nurses were wonderful at keeping my mind off it and protecting your ‘bits’ as best they can.

Yes you will be a bit tender afterwards but I was out riding my ebike a couple of days after.

I think there are now less issues with biopsies since they started using transperenial method rather then through the rectum. It sounds a lot worse than it actually is, you’ll feel a little discomfort when you hear the clicks as the samples taken, but unless you have a very low pain threshold I wouldn’t worry.

Good luck and keep us posted on the result👍

Thanks for all the tips, guys. Fingers crossed. Had heard that you may feel tired for a couple of months and was a bi worried as I'm going on a walking holiday in September.

The first biopsy I had was the up the bum TRUS one. It wasn't nearly as bad as I'd feared and I thanked the urologist. He said it had been easy because I had a receptive anus.

I walked back to missus, who was waiting in the car to drive me home. I bragged about my receptive anus. She said, "That's strange I've always found you an awkward ar*e hole." 😲

The second one, because my disease had progressed, was done under general anaesthetic. It was an absolute doddle.

The only side effects were a bit of blood in my pee and ketchup semen.

After my biopsy in May I walked the Beacons way in 5 days a few weeks after.
