Two weeks post RALP...thinking pumps

My experience so far has been quite positive a week after catheter removal. Despite some leaking (some days worse than others) I have had a couple of spontaneous short lived almost erections which I am taking as a hopeful sign of future sexual function. The hospital said they may be able to dispense a pump, but suggested looking online for something as they were out of stock. But where to start. Is there anything I should be looking out for as an optional extra that might turbocharge the process?

Hi Mark

Initially it all depends on at what stage is your recovery and what do you need the pump for? If it is simply to practise and get your system going with the blood flowing into the penile tissue you can buy a cheap one from any online sex shop. However for more serious use - for creating a long lasting strong erection - you need a medical grade pump. The NHS in some practices will prescribe the device: Somaerect, supplied buy iMedicare.

I have been using pumps for many years and if you are interested in a survey I have posted on this site please go to:

If you need further help please ask and I will be pleased to advise based on many years of experience of have used a number of pumps.

Mark, I am not sure though that it is allowed to use the pump so early after the surgery!

My doctor and most of what I heard, recommend using it after 3 months. It is better to ask your doctor first!

Thanks, I should have clarified that I am at the research bit rather than the immediate use moment. My doctor suggested six weeks post surgery would be a good starting point for introducing a pump into the recovery repetoire. I am at the wading through the various devices stage trying to put a price on regaining sexual function. Whether medical grade pumps might achieve that, or discovering that basically they all pretty much do the same thing regardless of price tag.

I imagine a girlie mag might help? 🙂

Hi Mark

Have you had any advice from your consultant as to when you should start using the pump. You should have probably been given Viagra or similar to get the blood flowing into the penis. I was told to wait at least six weeks before using a pump, depending on my recovery.

A medical grade pump, such as SOMAerect, often prescribed by the NHS, is the best. But to start with a cheap one from an online sex shop should do the trick. I have done a survey on pumps which you can find at the following link on this site:

Happy to give you more help if needed.
