Blood in stool

hi

I am Rebbeca

My husband was diagnosed with T2 ( 3+4), PC in April 2024. He had HR and RT which he completed Oct 2025.

His recent blood test showed low blood count in red blood cell and white cells. Also , they found blood in stool. It was invisible as he noticed nothing in his stool. Overall he is feeling ok.

I am  desperately worried; he did not have much bleeding or symptoms during his RT but now suddenly this has happened , is this secondary cancer? is it going to get better

Is it possible that RT has affected his blood count? is this sign of a secondary cancer.

Any help I will be ever so grateful.

Thank you

First to add secondary cancers due to RT are statistically tiny around 1% overall and even then of the type that take years to appear so it is highly unlikely that will be the trigger.

I am not aware of low blood count being significantly affected by RT for prostate only but those who have whole body Rt eg bones etc, it can sometimes affect them .

If 50 or over he could have previously taken up the NHS colon cancer screening offer every two years. If not , it will be investigated anyway. Conditions other than bowel cancer can cause blood in stools so it needs further input from your own doctors. It is possible there is some slight internal bleeding from the radiotherapy which can take a while to appear.

Rebecca, I had the same issue and had a colonoscopy just to rule out any issues.

Thanks Chris

Hi Rebecca ,

I also had blood in my stools , at it’s worst i could see blood in the loo and on the toilet paper,

I had diarrhoea sometimes , with terrible urgency,

So it was decided that i should have an colonoscopy which came back clear 👍however it continued and my hospital was very thorough and decided to give me a Sehcat scan which proved I had Bile Acid Malabsorption, which can be controlled with Medication.

All my bowels issues have improved to what it was , I hope this gives you some reassurance.

Anthony
