Problems after first or second infusion of docetaxel

Help, my husband has just had his seconnd cycle of docetaxel. He wAs hospitalised at 8 days with a high temp and infection but no definite diagnosis. . Neutraphils were 0.3 and he was put on IV antibiotics. He developed a rash which was quite severe but even dermatologist could not diagnose it. It was all over his body as the days went by. He has just had another infusion and only two days in. The main thing at present is that his hands have virtually shed a layer of thick skin almost like a glove. No one seems to have a clue. We are told that Docetaxel doesn’t normally cause a hand and foot issue.

Has anyone any idea what could be going on? We are both scared about its all going to happen again.

Any ideas would be so welcome as the medical staff seem puzzled. Maybe a virus? Nothing showed up. At day 8 it seems unlikely it was a reaction to the Docetaxel.

Help!

Not sure why you have been told that it isn't the docetaxel - it is a known side effect! My friend had the same problem with docetaxel for breast cancer - see the Breast Cancer Care website for symptoms, things to avoid and possible treatments.

We were fortunate to have a meeting with the specialist nurse who was in charge of the chemotherapy unit and she warned us about caring for the skin of hands and soles of feet because this a well documented side effect of Docetaxel. Not sure why your hospital have not given you the pack on this drug.

Thank you Lyn. I had heard of it but the link you gave me explains it so well. My husband has TYPE 2 diabetes and also had had had a high temp I think those two things might have made him more vulnerable to it.
