Co-payment by NHS for private surgery

I was in contact with a lady on this forum some time ago who had arranged a private prostatectomy for about twenty grand with Professor Whocannotbenamedhere.

She said the NHS had offered to reimburse 75% of the cost. I have lost her details, so can I ask, in what I believe to be common parlance, is this a thing?

My father-in-law aged 86, is crippled with arthritis, and sooner than wait indefinitely for a hip replacement on the Covid Health Service, is about to pay out fifteen grand to have it done privately next month.

Anyone heard of NHS contributions to such operations?

Cheers, John.

Not that way round, although it is more and more common for the NHS to agree with the private hospital directly. J has just had an elbow op on the NHS but at the Spire. It is part of reducing the number of COVID free patients going into hospital and catching it there.
