Knowledge / Advice / Reassurance Wanted Please

Hi,

I have in the last 2/3 days been told I most likely have Prostatitis. I am a 35 year old male who is a type 2 diabetic. Looking for some advice / knowledge / reassurance on the condition if possible.

Like many of the posts I have read I started with Thrush that just seemed to keep coming back around once every 6/8 months. My blood sugars in recent months have been the best they’ve ever been and have been coming in at just above the pre-diabetic band (around 48 HBA1C).

My last ‘bout’ of thrush just would not clear and around a month later I developed symptoms of a water infection UTI. I was given antibiotics which seemed to clear it up after a 7 hour A+E visit due to my pulse / heart rate going through the roof and my white blood cells apparently being high. This seemed to clear up the UTI but the thrush seemed to hang around and not shift. I saw a doctor again about thrush and was given 2 more creams to apply but I felt the starting of many symptoms others mention regarding bladder fullness, Lower back pain, pressure / pain between scrotum and anus, abdominal pain etc. These symptoms got worse and I felt like I had some sort of infection as I started to feel awful in general and had flu symptoms and feeling down and depressed also.

I mentioned the worsening of the symptoms to the Doctor and he said it sounded like Prostatitis. He did a examination and confirmed prostrate was swollen and tender. He started me on antibiotics for 7 days and took a urine sample to be sent off to the laboratory. I have a follow up telephone call (due to covid instead of in person) in 5 days as it will of been 7 days since going on the Antibiotics.

Just wanted to ask a few questions if possible ?

Can the infection / condition cause ‘Brain Fog’ and confusion as this is what I’ve noticed more and more so over the last day 4/5 days. The doctor also put me on a blood pressure tablet but felt this was possibly because of the infection / anxiety / how I was feeling.

Is there anything I should ask during my follow up call (obviously excluding the results of my urine test) ?

Can Prostatitis make you feel depressed and down as I have found I have had a sinking feeling in my stomach and a lack of want or excitement about anything. I am I must add on a antidepressant and have been for approximately 12 years but have not felt ‘blue or depressed’ for many years due the antidepressants I am on.

Thankyou for reading and I am sorry it’s war and peace in length but thought it best to try and give as much detail as possible.

Hi Jody,

Googling uti and brain fog, it does suggest a connection in older people. I suspect it is possible in younger people. Any medication or particularly a change in the medication can affect your mood, also poor sleep due to the need to get up in the night for the toilet can be a problem.

It is also possible you have COVID a third of people won't have obvious symptoms. If you have done regular lateral flow tests you may be able to rule that one out.

Hope all goes well with the doctors. Prostatitis can be very hard to clear up, sometimes needing very strong antibiotics.

UTI's can cause anything from brain fog through to delirium (and even sepsis).

Prostatitis can be notoriously difficult to diagnose and treat. One of our consultant urologists at The FOPS a prostatitis specialist if you want to join our session in January.
