Hello

My husband has been newly diagnosed and having had cancer myself, really want to understand treatment options.

A routine health MOT flagged up a PSA level of 29! A scan showed a mass in prostate and the biopsy confirmed prostate cancer with a Gleason score of 7 (3+4).

We are waiting for an appointment to discuss next steps and treatment options. Am I right in thinking that because his PSA is so high, active watching won't be an option, even though his Gleason score was low?

Sorry if any of the terminology is wrong, I'm just trying to get as much information as possible.

Thanks in advance of any advice.

Amelie, sorry you find yourself on here.

If you look at the top of the page you should see the number for the charities specialist nurses, give them a call, they absolutely brilliant. Sometimes a conversation is easier, especially if new to prostate cancer.

Thanks Chris

Hi Amelie,

My first PSA was also 29 (it dropped to 21 on subsequent test) I was G9.

You are correct in the assumption that Active Surveillance is unlikely with a PSA above 20, also anything higher than a G6 will need attention fairly soon.

There are many possible treatments focal treatments are the least intrusive, they are not available at most hospitals, and only suitable if a small cancer. These are ruled out in most patients as the tumour is too large. The other extreme is that the cancer has spread, unlikely with a PSA of 30.

If you are at neither of the extremes the most likely choice is surgery or radiotherapy. Post back here when you have more details.

Dave
