The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is the independent regulator for nurses and midwives in the UK, and nursing associates in England. Our vision is safe, effective and kind nursing and midwifery practice that improves everyone’s health and wellbeing.

More experienced nurses and midwives across the UK are taking on complex, expert roles known as ‘advanced practice’. Nurses and midwives taking on these roles has huge benefits for the people in their care. Their advanced knowledge and skill enable them to demonstrate advanced communication skills and make timely person-centred decisions. They have the freedom and authority to act in assessment, diagnosis and treatment of the people they care for.

We’re reviewing how we might regulate this type of role in the future and we’d love to hear from you.

The importance of public voice

We want the voices and experiences of people who encounter professionals in advanced practice roles in their care to shape our approach. That's why we are setting up a public advisory group. We want to hear about your experiences and your views on possible additional regulation for this type of professionals.

The group will be made up of people with lived experience of this kind of care. No previous experience or knowledge is required – the desire to share your experiences and views is all that’s needed. Should you require any additional support to participate, please speak to us about your needs and we’ll be happy to help.

Meetings will take place online every six or so weeks between September 2023 and January 2024 (online).

The first meeting will be on Monday 25 September 2023, 1:00pm to 3:00pm (online).

We have an involvement payment policy in place to recognise your contribution.

Expressions of interest

We’d be delighted to hear from you – if you’re interested please email us at PublicEngagement@nmc-uk.org today.
