Hello Everyone,

I have advanced prostate cancer with Extracapsular Extension. I decided to do a radiation treatments: IMRT and HDR Brachy. My Radiation Oncologist says that since I have extracapsular extension, placing spacer SpaceOAR Gel can push cancer cells out of high dose area. He recommended instead to do bio-degradable balloon. This is a latest technology, developed by BioProtect Israeli company and just approved by FDA here in US. But I was told that BioProtect is used in Europe for more than 10 years. Did anyone used or heard about bio-degradable balloons?

Please share your experience or thoughts.

Rectal spacer balloons were used privately in the UK before SpaceOAR and Barrigel were around. I have not heard of balloons being used recently. Last time I heard of their use was by the Rutherford Cancer Centres in 2019.

I can't see why balloons would be any less risk than the gels for pushing micro-mets out of the treatment field.
