Confused about biopsy result

Hello all,

My husband missed a call from his Dr so we checked his MyChart and all the cores except one say benign prostatic tissue. Can anyone explain what this means for the other sample....

Prostate, Right Mid, Biopsy: - Prostatic tissue displaying a tiny focus of atypical small acinar proliferation which is suspicious but non-diagnostic. - A PIN3 stain was reviewed and shows AMCAR expression but at least partial preservation of the myoepithelial cell layer.

Good afternoon,

This article may be of some use to you.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S030228380600889X#:~:text=Atypical%20focus%20suspicious%20but%20not%20diagnostic%20of%20malignancy%2C%20also%20referred,group%20of%20glands%20suspicious%20for

Unless you've got a scientific background papers like this are difficult to understand but perhaps someone here will be able to simplify it for you. If not I would call your doctor and ask him to explain it in layman's terms.

All the best

Adrian.

The atypical small acinar proliferation means that there is something that indicates that there MAY be cancer but in itself it is not a diagnostic that says it IS cancer.

AMCAR is a misspelling and is actually AMACR which is a protein test performed on suspicious lesions to detect cancer - positive means that cancer is detected but as the cell layers remain intact it implies that there is a strong chance that it is retained within the cells and hasn't broken through the cell walls.

If this were my biopsy then I would be feeling quite positive that although there is cancer present, it would seem to be early stage and that treatment should be curative.

The specialist can explain it further
