Polymyalgia Rheumatica

Just come off a phone appointment with my GP and was telling him about the issues with my joints. He said my symptoms suggest it might be Polymyalgia and I’ve to have a blood test. These pains only started after taking HT so I’m wondering if anyone else has developed this whilst on Prostap.

Hi Derek

Also the others who have mysterious aches and pains following ADT. I was on zoladex plus RT. Psa levels have remained <0.1 and testosterone has been creeping back up over the last 18 mo.

I had expected to feel better but no! After a too long investigation involving renal specialists and haematologist it turns out I have myeloma, cancer of the bone marrow. So  it looks like the onco has fixed the Pca (so far so good) but I have another unrelated problem with no apparent connection. The aches, pains, fatigue etc which I had put down to ADT turned out to be something else. I didn't need cancer twice!!

Myeloma is not curable but treatable and I started the 1st of 8 cycles of chemo last month.

Don't want to start worrying people but be aware of other potential illness.

Looks like the King may join the club although Pca has been denied. I wonder what his username might be.

Joking apart, Peter, I'm very sorry to hear about your second cancer diagnosis. What an absolute bummer!

There was a bloke on my ward who.had RARP the same day as me. We got nattering and apparently, 5 years prior to his prostate cancer diagnosis, he'd had to deal with testicular cancer. Who knows what's around the corner.

Best of luck mate.

It sounds like what might have killed John Cleese's Norwegian blue parrot.

Joking apart mate, I can't really help because I've never been on Prostap  However, since being diagnosed with prostate cancer, I've blamed every ailment I've had since on it, or the treatment to try and cure it. I get terrible pains in both legs, hips, and lower back. There's no suggestion its linked to the cancer, more like osteoarthritis and just getting old and doing too much running on roads when I was younger.

Best of luck with the blood test anyway.

I did do a search on here and there’s a few posts from the past of people with PCa getting Polymyalgia but nothing seems to connect it to PCa or HT. Maybe it’s just coincidence that this started when on HT.

Hi Decho

I was diagnosed with PMR (Polymayalgia Rheumatic) soon after my prostatectomy (pure coincidence, I think). One of the main symptoms is great difficulty (severe pain) in raising your arms over you shoulder level. My blood test for c-reactive protein (CRP) showed a very high value, 120. I was prescribed steroid (Prednisone) and the pain disappeared overnight. However I was kept on it for many months while my CRP was monitored and then gradually reduces the dose of predisone over several months. If you are diagnosed with PMR the main thing to do is to contact your doctor or hospital immediately if you experience severe headaches. I think doctors tend to think of PMR when you experience persistent shoulder pain.

There is another condition which is a syndrome called Fibromyalagia (often confused with PMR) caused by stress.

I hope you get it sorted out soon.

Hi Decho. PMR is difficult to diagnose as it is just general aches and pains and raised inflammatory markers as Pratap mentioned. It is usually associated with shoulder pain rather than knee pain which I know you suffer from. It is an autoimmune disease and can sometimes be linked to having a severe virus or stress/mental trauma (although this link has not been clinically proven). Could getting PCa have triggered it? The standard treatment is very much as Pratap describes. I've not had it but I've had something closely related to it and a bit nastier. Thankfully it's now been in remission for eleven years.

I had PMR a year after my Open RP and was also treated with Prednisone/olone for about 16 months after the PMR's detection. It took a year for them to diagnose the PMR and they found several other problems trying to find out what it was so it was more than 3 years after my surgery that the PMR was cured. At the time I was also concerned about a connection with PCa but was abused for this on another Forum. I never had HT but there may be a PCa connection. It's related to the Immune System and that's what we have internally to fight the cancer so perhaps the Immune guys are overworked and are trying to tell us something. My PCa has now came back after 8 years and I would not have used Prednisone to supress the immune system in hind sight.

Thanks Barrie,  I got my blood test results yesterday and they were normal…so I don’t have PMR.
I can only conclude from this that this is another side-effect of Prostap 3 ADT that I am just going to have to accept or find a magic way to relieve the symptoms.

I hope you get your PSA under control.

Cheers,

Derek

Hi Peternigel,

Sorry to hear this …just when you think you are suppose to be getting your life back, another cancer  jumps up to bite you on the bum😑 It must be hard for you but hopefully you can keep it under control. I am going to go back to my GP to ask what’s next with this, you’ve really got to be proactive if you want the support you need.

The thing is generally I feel great, bursting with energy despite dreadful Insomnia…somethings keeping me going, maybe it’s the Sertraline….or the Daily shot of caffeine.🀣 I’m just back from a 30mile ebike ride, lots of hills and a strong wind against me, but I feel like a teenager again!(if only!). I could have gone further but building myself up slowly again to 50+ miles which is what I use to do before the worst of ADT side effects kicked in.
Actually my knees were a good bit better this morning, I tried something last night which I’m going to do for the next week. I’m terrified to say what it is until I’ve proved one way or the other so watch this space.

All the best,

Derek

I’m actually a morning person Harty, too knackered at night. But then I get into bed and 5 mins after that the first hot flush of the night happens which wakes me up! Unfortunately my wife is giving it big πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€ by then😟

Long gone are the days of a nightly bonk!🀣🀣🀣
