The pump

User
Posted 24 Jun 2023 at 12:15

After being given the go ahead from the surgeon I tried the pump for the 1st time last night. After a careful start I was able to get some satisfactory erections which was a shock to the system! After the advised 10 minutes I noticed things were red and the foreskin sore. Is this normal? I do wonder if I pumped too much and overdid it or perhaps just because there has been no action for a few months so to speak. Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Make sure you use a good quality lubricant and get a decent amount on the head of the penis, when i started i found most of the discomfort was coming from fricton as the erection formed and was "dragged" up the sides of the tube which are not slippy at all without a lube of some sort. A small amount appied to the black rubber cushioning bit at the bottom also helps make a good airtight seal, not too much or you might get too much spare skin sucked in as well or worse !!. A good close shave around the base of the penis also helps greatly

How to use a vacuum pump for rehabilitation and for penetrative sex

I had RP nearly 13 years ago and we have been using pumps for all that period

Depending on your GP you may be able to obtain a medical grade pump, preferably a battery operated one (SOMAerect – imedicare.co.uk) on prescription. It would be very helpful if you discuss the process of rehabilitation with your wife/partner in detail. When you feel healed and confident enough start using the pump. Initially do not put the ring on. You have undergone a massive mental and physical trauma so be kind to yourself and be gentle. Your penis may be so flaccid that it may seem impossible to insert enough of the penis into the pump. Hold the pump firmly but not too heavily against your body. Then start pumping with the handle or press the on button on the battery-operated device. You will find that your scrotum tends to get sucked in (don’t panic, there is a vacuum release button if you feel pain!) but carry on until you feel your penis shows a sign of erection. Stop pumping, remove the pump and repeat the process while pulling your scrotum away from the base of the pump. Gradually your penis will get bigger every time you pump. Don’t rush. With a bit of practice within a few sessions you will achieve a strong erection. At   this point it is ideal to enjoy masturbating again to remind your penis and particularly your brain how it felt when you were young or before your surgery. Now is the time to put a ring on and start the process of creating an erection by a start-stop process when you will notice your penis growing even when you stop pumping. When you have achieved a reasonable size erection slip the ring on to your penis. Warning: when the ring ‘pings’ on to the penis it can be very uncomfortable but remember no pain no gain! Because of the ring on your penis it stops any leakage of urine and you are free to masturbate normally. Warning: Because of the ring at the base of the penis there is a ‘hinge’ effect and the penis waggles a lot. Take care when you or wife masturbates you or when attempting penetrative sex. Thanks for that - I’m beginning to get the hang of things not quite up to putting the kettle on though! Next stage will be introducing the ring in a few weeks after a bit more practice and a bit more of a ‘play’ ! Baby steps…..

Aye up Pumpers, I’m 2 years 4 months post RP, double nerve sparing, and after judicial use of the pump, low dose Cialis and for the last year Caverject, my natural erections have returned. Sure, the old boy is shorter and has lost some girth, but life is good.

Never be tempted to put the kettle on while pumping, I guarantee the DPD man will never visit again!

I don’t…it retracts itself as you become erect, mind you I’m no expert it’s taken me a while to find the best combination of cylinders and inserts. The one thing Ive found is that you MUST stop your scrotum from being sucked in.

I can imagine that if you had a tight foreskin then using the pump creates additional girth and glans size compared to a natural erection and that could prevent the foreskin from pulling back over the glans. I can't comment further as my foreskin (which was extremely tight) was removed when I was aged 25!

When you have a natural erection the foreskin pulls back (at leat mine did) naturally. So it is helpful to pull back the foreskin gently to help the erection and that is what I do. When you start pumping  pull back the foreskin back skin just a little then pump a little, pulling the scrotum away from the pump to stop it being sucked in, so the penis is a little erect, release the vacuum, take the penis out and pull the foreskin a little more and start pumping again. Initially it should be done in several stages making sure that the pumping action does not pull in the scrotum and the skin around the penis. When experienced you can do the whole process in just 2/3 stages in a few minutes. I have been using VEDs since my surgery 12 years ago. I am sending you a private message offering you more explicit help if you can respond.

When starting to use a pump, there's a 2 week training program to go through before trying for a usable erection. Usually, it's too uncomfortable if you don't do the training program.

Have you had a pump clinic session and had its use explained and demoed on you?

I could also do with some advice from any regular users - my €4 Temu special works but I am not sure how much to pump as I don't want to do any damage. It's not for any penetrative purposes - just to keep it in functional and healthy order.

Thanks. I’ve not been on any course or shown what to do other than read the manual. I started with the training programme - 3 pumps and then 5 second wait before another pump and so on - deflating as you go before starting the process again. No one has mentioned anything other than start using it.

Hi Mgor

Like you, i have only followed the manual with a Soma 2 pump for the past few months and have found that if you take your time and slowly build up to a full erection, it doesn't have to be uncomfortable.

I pump three times and wait ten seconds, pump three times, wait ten seconds, then release for ten seconds as blood is still flowing into the penis, then start again but increasing more of the three pumps-release method each time until ive eventually got to where i feel comfortable. Rushing will make you ache and feel sore like you mentioned. Honestly, you will achieve better results and feel more comfortable just taking things slowly and being patient.

I've found i can now switch the kettle on, dissapear for a ten minute pump and still have time for a cuppa whilst watching daytime tv.

Good luck and walk before you run

Thanks for the reassurance. As with everything PC related patience seems to be key. It sounds so normal putting the kettle on before having a pump!

When I started with pump. I was given a verbal consultation with the rep. He told me to pump up many times in 15 mins but to take slow by stopping after a few pumps to let blood flow in naturally. I was told to pump until it was sore but bearable  and hold this for only a couple of seconds.

This was just for the rehabilitation phase. I was also sore and almost bruised. 🤷‍♂️

Hello Pratap.....it was nice joining you on the zoom call last week.  I enjoy your insight, and positive outlook on this subject!  I admire your partner's participation in the forum, and her support for you.  I look forward to hearing more from you in the future.

Yes, the Zoom meetings are very useful. I hope I don't come over as know all. We had such a tough time during my recovery and with my wife's help managed to re-claim our life after this traumatic experience that we feel that we would like to help others. Of course no two couple are the same but there are some common issues which can be discussed in a close forum to help one another. I would be please to receive and reply any messages privately. Regards. Pratap

You have the right to sound like a "know it all", because you have found the solution!

Sounds great.....I'm new to the group, so cannot send private messages, but maybe in the future, I will message you about some things.

Thanks again,

Dan

A question for the experienced "pumpers" out there... I'm at the "training program" stage 😉

Is there a reason why the foreskin should be pulled back before using the pump? Does it need to be? Is there a problem leaving it "as is"?

Much appreciated

J
