Hubby had his 15th chemo 10 days ago. He is on Paclitaxel and Carboplatin, exhausted docetaxel and cabazitaxel before that. He had brain met in April and radiotherapy for that in June last scan no sign of it just inflammation. He is on dexamethasone.  Since chemo we both came down with covid for first time. Now last few days he is in bed all the time, cant stay awake for 5 minutes, breathless and dizzy if he moves. Saw doc Saturday who said its the combo of virus and chemo his oxygen levels were low and go home to bed. His bloods were really low before last chemo haemoglobin 8.9. He had a transfusion a month ago. I think he needs another transfusion but not seeing oncologist until 5 Dec. He is getting so weak, being in bed so much is not good for him. I just don’t know what to do.

Have you thought about just taking him to A&E. I’m not medically trained, but  if his oxygen levels are low it sounds like he needs some oxygen. I went to A&E when I had difficulty breathing…my oxygen levels were low and they discovered I had Pneumonia! The first thing they did was give me oxygen to bring the levels back up.

Perhaps phone the chemo suite before you set off to A&E - maybe call them tonight if his breathing is so laboured. It is really important that chemo patients have speedy treatment for any infection as their natural ability to fight infection has been suppressed. He may need oxygen but he may also need a big-hitting antibiotic. I might be wrong but I think the chemo team might be a bit cross that the GP on Saturday didn't send him straight to hospital.

So Sorry to hear that Almendras but I did wonder as low oxygen levels are a sign. If it’s any consolation I recovered very quickly from Pneumonia and was out after 2 nights in hospital and strong antibiotics.

I was told that I need to be careful in the future so I got myself the pneumococcal vaccine and also bought myself an oxygen gauge(quite cheap) in case it happens again.

I will cross my fingers that he makes a quick recovery.

Thanks for your reply. I have talked him into going to A&E first thing tomorrow. He didn’t want to go because of all the waiting but he has realised he has to go.

We live in Spain. Trying to get through to the chemo unit by phone is totally impossible. I have phoned constantly from 8 to 2 when they are there running the clinics and they never answer the phone. We are an hours drive to the hospital so I can’t just pop down in person either. Plus I also have covid. Anyway we will hopefully get some help tomorrow morning in A&E. You don’t get the support here like in the UK. No hospice support, counselling, no Macmillan. No specialist nurse or 24/7 telephone. I didn’t take him to A&E Saturday because we have covid thats why we saw local on call doc. Thanks for the reply.

He has been admitted to hospital today with pneumonia. No thanks to the doctor who saw him Saturday but at least now he is on antibiotics and oxygen. Thanks for your replies, it feels so lonely a journey at times.
